I am having problems with CherryPy not responding for some reason.
CherryPy runs on a solaris server. We are quering it using the
following command:
/usr/local/bin/wget -O /dev/null -T10 localhost:8081

When the CherryPy is running, I get the following output:
--20:17:00-- http://localhost:8081/
=> `/dev/null'
Resolving localhost... 127.0.0.1, ::1
Connecting to localhost|127.0.0.1|:8081... connected.

Location: http://localhost:8081/status [following]
--20:17:00-- http://localhost:8081/status
=> `/dev/null'

HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 34,426 (34K) [text/html]

0K .......... .......... .......... ... 100%
55.04 MB/s

When it is not responding, I get the below output:
http localhost:8081
http request sent, awaiting response... Read error (Connection timed
out) in headers.
retrying.
network is unreachable

What additional input do you guys need me to bring in order to be able
to help me with this?

Thanks

Gil

Now this is interesting as I've CherryPy running as a Windows service
and we've been experimenting the same kind of behavior now and then. For
now I'm testing if it's the service layer that is guilty or CherryPy
itself but I have almost no exploitable information yet.

We're using pingdom to regularly check the server's status.

Which version of CP are you using? I'm running 3.1 hosting a Django
application.

Hello all!!

Weird. I'm away from CherryPy for a long time - probably three years or so - doing "other work" (working as a network engineer). Yesterday, a friend of mine complained about exactly the same problem.

My friend has a CherryPy application that he uses to manage a "cyber cafe"-style shop. It used to work for a long time, but it started having periodic lockups.

He solved his problem the "hard way" - by reformatting all client PCs. It solved the problem.

He suspects that some (or many) PCs were "infected" with some kind of malware, that were sending trash or tryng to connect randomly to the CherryPy server. Some of this trash could be causing the server to lockup. He does not have any log so we can't really be sure.

Hey Carlos,

Long time no see indeed :)

Well, the machine where my CP server is running was indeed infected by a
worm, the machine was cleaned up and the worm removed but I suspect not
completely to be honest. Moreover the same application has been running
on a different machine with no issue whatsoever (but with a different
set of users that don't use the application in the same way).

In any case, it would be interesting to gather informations regarding
such problems for others.

Hi,

The system is in our client’s site and this client is our country’s ministry of defense. I cannot format all clients’ machines and it’ll be a big surprise if there is a malware in the local network (not connected to the internet).

Thanks

Gil

Well, that's a completely different environment than a cyber cafe where anyone can connect or use any site, and where infections are a fact of life. But please, by any means, I did not suggest that everyone with this problem should reformat their PCs :-) It's just something that a friend of mine did - and which solved his particular problem. And I not believe that this is the BEST solution, because it does not really discover the root cause and solve the problem.

Anyway - CherryPy *may* be vulnerable to crashing when fed with bad input. That's just a speculation. As I said, I'm away from active development from over three years, so please don't take this as an definitive diagnostic (or "accusation"). It's just a possibility, raised by my friend (mentioned in my previous email). Also note that many programs have this problem; it's something well known but pretty hard to entirely avoid. And depending on how you use it, you may be accidentaly triggering one such condition. But that's just a speculation.

Hi,

I’m very sorry if you got me wrong. I just wanted to say that this might not be the case in my problem. J

Thanks a lot for trying to help
