Panel-Swati Neogi, Saikat Chakraborty and A.K Jana
Swati Neogi- (Only reading her notes would suffice the requirement; She was the best in the panel )
1.) What is the basic law of mass transfer ? Write its expression.
2.)How will you define molar flux J? How it varies with different frames of reference?
3.) How can we predict Gas phase diffusion coefficient? (She expected me to remember whole Chapman-Enskog eqn but I just told her the variation of T ^1.5 and P)
4.) What is the use of Stefan Tube?
5.) What are the various theories of mass transfer? What were the model parameters in each theory?
A.K Jana- (His part of my viva was the shortest)
1.) What are your favourite subjects? A. I said Heat transfer, he smiled and said this is not my area of expertise. He mentioned his subjects of interest but then continued my viva with heat transfer questions only)
2.) Someone before me made a rough sketch of 1,2 shell n tube Heat exchanger. He asked me to redraw it and correct it . Followed by couple of questions on baffles (advantages and disadvantages), tie rods, etc.
3.) What is overall heat transfer coefficient? Significance? How many resistances are included to calculate 'U'?
Saikat Chakraborty-
(Refer to KMJ's viva questions )

Panel: DM, Sudipto, Sudarshan(didn't even come)...was a written viva(sounds strange)...18 qns. in 50 minutes...
1. Gibb's-Duhem relation.
2. What is Departure function?
3. Reason for offset in P-controller.
4. Any equation for a non-ideal gas. (I wrote Van der waal eqn.)
5. Three cases: Pr=1, Pr1. Draw Thermal and Hydrodynamic boundary layers.
6. Plot of Utility Cost and Capital Cost vs. (delta.T)min .
7. Plot response of 1st order system for step input change. What is time constant?
8. Significance of terms in Navier-Stokes eqn.
9. Bubble point calculation.
10. Any 1 law of crushing.
11. Criteria of (CP)hot and (CP)cold above and below Pinch temp.
12. Principle of working of Rotameter.
13. For reversible Exothermic rxn., if T increases, will equlibrium conversion increase or decrease?
14. Significance of Schmidt No.
15. Unit of rate constant of n-th order rxn.
16. State Henry's law.
17. Difference between Nusselt no. and Biot no.
18. Derive critical velocity for Ball mill.

KMJ's viva
Panel-Swati Neogi, Saikat Chakraborty and A.K Jana
Swati Neogi-
1.) What is the driving force for Mass Transfer? A. Chemical Potential.
2.) What is Chemical Potential dependent on? A. Concentration difference, Nature of Chemical Species, Temperature, Phase, Pressure etc.
3.) Write Fick's Law
4.) What is the analogous term for diffusivity in heat transfer and momentum transfer? A. Thermal Diffusivity and Kinematic Viscosity (Write their formulae as well)
5.) Basic Questions on Dimensionless Numbers.
A.K Jana-
1.) Do you want interesting questions or questions based on book knowledge? Do not act smart and go for interesting questions. I tried which led him to ask me a design problem on Distillation Towers. I had to retract my statement immediately
2.) Favourite Subject? A. Thermodynamics (Yes, I love ThermoD, deal with it.) Key is to drag him into unfamiliar territory and ThermoD works well to achieve that objective.
3.) What is the importance of ThermoD? A. Speak something on the lines of Equilibrium, reversibility etc.
4.) Name few kinds of Equilibrium? A. Phase Equilibrium and Chemical Equilibrium
5.) Write the multicomponent phase equilibrium equations in a non-reacting system?
6.) What is Chemical Potential dependent on?
7.) What does saying that " The reaction, A+B->C has reached Chemical Equilibrium" signify?
A. I am not going to give the answer to this. If you are so dumb to not be able to answer this question, call IIT authorities and they will take your degree away.
8.) What is reactive distillation? I was lucky to have read this on Quora before (Thanks Quora!)
9.) Another question based on an application of reactive distillation? Thankfully, it was the same Quora question. No, I am not finding that question for you. Deal with it.
Saikat Chakraborty-
1.) Write the formula for Michaelis Menten Kinetics?
2.) Write the formula for the same with Competitive Inhibition? Did not know the answer, tried to derive it in front of him, he got bored and changed the question.
3.) Some arbitrary question on how to achieve the maximum concentration of S in a reactor? Can't write the question in a comment. Call me and will tell you.
4.) Difference between non-ideal reactors and ideal reactors? A. Don't know about PFR but in CSTR, I explained something about the bell curve between residence time and no particles.
5.) What is the explicit Euler method? Did not know the answer
6.) Some question on what does the Eigenvector in a Langmuir equation like thing signify (He gave the equation) signify? Did not know the answer.
Basically Saikat focuses on reaction engg and ODE-PDE. Most hellish part of my viva due to the questions, Saikat did not try to psyche as written in previous year questions. Found him to be congenial. I found Swati to be more aggressive. (Might be due to my lacklustre performance in my BTP)
