Scientifically Oriented Question: What is the estimated size of an oil molecule?
Evidence: We found that the diameter ends up being .5 mm. The formula for volume is v= 4/3 (3.14) r^3. when diameter is plugged in, the total is .524mm^3. The area is 19.6 mm^2. The thickness comes out to be 0.027mm.
Explanation: After calculating the diameter, volume, area, and height, the conclusion is that the thickness of the oil layer is 0.027 mm.
Connection: By calculating the size of the molecule we practiced many different things. We practiced measuring-specifically with a ruler. We also practiced using significant figures and remembering to put the label on each and every number. No naked numbers!!
Communication: It is important for people to realize why significant figures are used and the importance of correct measurements. Significant figures ensure that we are measuring to the correct place value. The easiest way to teach someone else how sig figs work is to sit down and explain the different steps in finding the correct numbers.
Reflection: Others in the class seemed to perform the experiment the same way. They mostly connected the same points, but the main different was in the size. Everyone had a slightly different measurement. Some due to amount of water in the dish or amount of time it took for them to begin to measure the molecule.
