Research Discussions

Research Discussions will be posted online to Mr.Helmick's website/blog following labs. Students are to post about the lab completed in class that day. All labs pose a scientifically oriented question. Students should focus their attention to that question and follow the format detailed below:

Research Discussions should be taken very seriously as they are a Product Grade. Students will be given one (1) day from the date of the lab to complete the Research Discussion Post. For students with no online access they may use the library computer, class laptops, or turn in hand written Research Discussions. Some Research Discussions may be presented via online explorations of a scientifically oriented question. Each post will be worth 50 points (10 points per section)

I encourage students to be as creative with these Research Discussions as possible. If you find outside resources to aid in your presentation of the material I encourage you to link them to your posts. Make each post unique and original.

 Format
(The format will appear automatically upon clicking "Post A Question")
(Students may leave the description for each section and enter their information in a different font color or delete the description and enter their information.)

Scientifically oriented question – State the Question of the lab here.

Evidence – Students will give priority to evidence in responding to question. Students must list evidence supporting or negating the question. Evidence must be directly related to lab.

Explanation- Students must formulate an explanation from the evidence. Using evidence listed above, students will generate a possible explanation to the scientifically oriented question.

Connection- Students must connect the explanation to the scientific knowledge known or that is being taught. Students must attempt to make some previous connection to content, real life connection (real world application), or use connect to current studies.

CommunicationStudents must justify how to best communicate their new learned knowledge. Students will be encouraged to formulate a reasonable and logical argument to communicate their explanations to peers/teacher/public.

ReflectionStudents must reflect on another students Research Discussion citing similarities and differences amongst their post and the other students. Maybe another student has a different explantion, state why this may be even though you both provided the same evidence. You may also reflect on how their communication differs from yours. Etc.
