Subject: IIT Madras Alumni Association: Online Poll
To: highmulowsigma <highmul...@googlegroups.com>

Hello People,

Need a quick favour. Could you please pass this message to your friends, colleagues, departments and request them to vote :)

The IIT Madras Alumni Association is conducting a poll to elect office bearers for the next term. I have filed the nomination for the post of Vice President.

The Alumni Association has been steadily focussing on the alumni-student relationship, especially in the last two years, with initiatives such as IIT Mentor, Mock Interviews for final year students etc. However, these initiatives have not gained the traction expected. One of the primary reasons, as I understand, is the disconnect between the student community and the alumni. Most Universities abroad and to a great extent the IIMs have a strong culture of the alumni-student relationship through continuous activities which are both fun and meaningful. (For example, Wharton students and alumni helped to create the “Innovation and the Indian Healthcare Industry” which brought students to India where they studied the full range of healthcare issues in India)

My aim for the Alumni Association is two fold:

1) To strengthen the bond between the students and alumni. I have noticed during my tenure as the Academic Affairs Secretary that the students were not particularly inclined towards reaching out to alumni. (The Adieu, Start-Up weekend during Placements 09-10 are a couple of examples). It is essential that students think of alumni as friends who they can reach out to without any inhibitions. The alumni association, I believe needs to identify the needs of the student in each year and address those specific issues through events such as "Know Your Alumni" (for first years to have an EML/Panel Discussion/Informal Chat with alumni), internships in start-ups by alumni, career guidance for the pre-final and final year students (including the post graduate students) which will give an essence of how helpful the alumni network can be and increase the enthusiasm among the student community to reach out to alumni.

2) Further increase the intra alumni network, especially for young graduates. Strong databases with regional incharges and regular events(at both regional and national level) can go a long way in connecting with others from our alma matter.

I request you to take a couple of minutes to register your vote online. The process is as follows:

- Register here with your e-mail id
- A confirmation link will be sent to the e-mail id upon accepting which the registration will be complete
- Finally, log into http://www.iitmaa.org/iitmaaelection/ to cast your vote.

Also, another batchmate of mine (Ghanta V. S./Subbu) has filed for the post of Joint Secretary. It will be great help if you could vote for the two of us.

Request you to send this mail to your friends and colleagues from IIT Madras if you could.

Thanks and Regards,
Medarmetla Karthik
