Hey guys,

Last lab report! At this point, I'm assuming you are all experts at this so I'll keep these guidelines short :P

1.) Don't forget any sections, i.e. balanced equation + mechanism

2.) Show all your calculations.

3.) It would be beneficial to share data for this lab.I do take note on who shares their data and this has impact on the TA evaluation, so please share!

4.) Remember when you are constructing your discussion, you are trying to prove to me that you actually synthesized biodiesel. Discuss all of your collected data and specify which data actually helps you prove that you changed vegetable oil into biodiesel. Is their any change in appearance? Does the IR prove in its identification? How abou the TLC and viscosity test? Or maybe you believe your vegetable oil didn't change at all. If that's the case, what data do you have that suggests this? I like well thought out discussions, so please think about it! :-)

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Best,

Kyle

Thank you Rheanna and Allison for sharing your data. I will continue with this chain and add my two cents.

Relative Viscosity: 9.67

Rf Values of Oil: 0.086, 0.310
Rf Values of product: 0.207, 0.448

Last lab report everyone!

Here is my data:

Total TLC Run total: 5.7cm
Starting oil: 1.3cm/5.7cm = 0.228 rf
Biodiesel: 2.1cm/5.7cm = 0.368 rf

Relative viscocity: 10.4

I also got 1.14 g of the product in the end. I will scan my IR in a second for you guys.

Thanks for sharing your data guys! Please continue to do so :-)

REMINDER: The lab notebook check will be done tomorrow in lab, so make sure your notebook is ready for me!

Oh sorry guys! I realized I forgot to divide my Rf values by the distance traveled by the solvent front. Here's the corrrect data:

Rf of starting oil: 0.05, 0.3
Rf of product: 0.07, 0.28, 0.53

Here's my data:
Rf oil: .38
Rf product: .58
Relative viscosity of 8.12

I'm attaching my IR as well.  It's very close to Barbara's, and the broad peak at 3292 is actually just from some solvent, not from the product.  Also, sorry for it being 11pm on Sunday night.
