Folks,
Direct from the team that just won a $15,000 state grant for the Elkins Park Upper Elementary School Garden of Learning is an announcement that ties together two important activities for our community -- the Glenside reconstruction AND the EP Garden of Learning. As many know, Glenside Elementary is being rebuilt and there are many, many landscape plants that have been "banked" on the site hoping to reuse them for the new building landscape or other good uses in the school district.
Maureen Boland, key project cog with her architect/husband Michael Szura, have organized a plant rescue day for next Saturday, September 26, from 8 am to 12 noon. Here's the plan. With a few hearty-souls, we'll all dig and transport as many small shrubs and perennials we can from Glenside from about 8-10am. We'll transport and install the plants into the holding garden at EP from about 10-12 noon. This is a tough time of year for everyone -- back to school, jobs, soccer, etc. -- so we completely get it if you can't help at this point.
For those who can join in, please bring shovels, wheelbarrows, tarps, burlap, ropes, black plastic plant pots, etc. to help us move these plants. Please give whatever time you can spare, of course. If you drive an SUV, or better yet, a pickup truck or van and don't mind helping us transport some plants to EP, that would be great!
The coffee will be hot and we'll all have some fun! We'll break into groups and make short work of this. This is a rain or shine event so come prepared to get dirty!
By the way, Sherry ("The Banker") Hazlewood has done some excellent prep work to help the day go smoothly on the Glenside site, and EP Teacher, Mr. Rick Kraske, has been working with the Administration to prep the garden at EP -- way to go, Sherry and Rick!
Also, if you're wondering what they're going do with all that CASH, here's some timely news for all. Per Maureen, "We're thrilled about the recent $15,000 grant we got from the PADEP! Mr. Kraske and I have been discussing how to use these funds. Access to the garden and the raised beds are a priority, so we're looking at how to begin construction on the path and beds this fall....stay tuned!"
And we hope to see you there, next Saturday, 8am!
