In a world where people increasingly question the validity of the information they consume online, readers need to know that what they download from a trusted organization has been authored by that organization and has not been tampered with. Today, all types of organizations face new challenges to help ensure document authenticity and bolster reader confidence.

Fake or counterfeit documents are not a new problem. The potential impact of such documents, however, intensifies as we continue to become a more digital society. The federal government is noticing and taking action. Senator Ron Wyden introduced a bill that would improve procedures for the authentication, security, and tamper-evident delivery and transmission of certain court orders. As you can imagine, a fraudulent court order could have serious repercussions.

Beyond government entities, educational institutions also face significant document integrity and authenticity challenges. College transcripts have always been a target for counterfeiters. Cornell University leverages certified documents to counteract forgery attacks and communicate to the recipient that the document is authentic and unaltered. According to Cornell's website:

The world of trade finance, which historically used manual and paper-based processes, such as bills of materials, is entering the digital age. The ability to certify the authenticity of their documents is essential to enabling digitization processes, which they expect will expand the pace and volume of international trade.

Certifying a document with Adobe Acrobat is useful if you want the user to be able to make approved changes to a document. When you certify a document and a user makes approved changes, the certification is still valid. You can certify forms, for example, to guarantee that the content is valid when the user receives the form. You, as the creator of the form, can specify what tasks the user can perform. You can specify that readers can fill in the form fields without invalidating the document, for instance. However, if a user tries to add or remove a form field or a page, the certification will be invalidated.

Not all certified digital signatures are created equally. Organizations need to be sure their implementation uses long-term validation (LTV). LTV allows you to check the validity of a signature long after the document was signed. To achieve this, all the required elements for signature validation must be embedded in the signed PDF. The required elements for establishing the validity of a signature include the signing digital certificate chain, digital certificate revocation status (a system that checks to make sure a certificate is still valid), and a timestamp. Embedding these elements occurs when the document is signed, or even after a certified digital signature is created.

If some of this information is not added to the PDF, a certified digital signature can only be validated for a limited time. This limitation occurs because digital certificates related to the certified digital signature eventually expire or are revoked. Once a digital certificate expires, the issuing authority is no longer responsible for providing revocation status on that certificate. Without confirming revocation status, the certified digital signature cannot be validated. But, if the required elements are available and embedded during signing, the certified digital signature can be validated without requiring external resources for validation.

I wanted to silently print the documents from C# iTextSharp (using Foxit reader process ) after digitally signing the document.Once the document is printed the Yellow color question mark is affixed in the signature part,

So overall i need to save the PDF with validated signature using C# and iTextSharp, so that the green check mark should come by default and same should be visible in silent print ( Without needed to open the file first using Foxit/Adobe reader ).

I tried to silently print the document using Adobe Reader and it works fine ( Since the Adobe reader window will be popped up and do the signing process even in the silent print mode, but in case of Foxit reader no such window will be opened during the silent print )

1. Credential Validation Page: To validate degree or certificate information, visit the validation page. Enter the 12-digit CeDiD found in the upper corner of the CeDiploma or CeCertificate, along with the first two letters of the name as it appears on the diploma.

2. Digital Signature: All CeDiplomas and CeCertificates are digitally signed by CeCredential Trust. When the document is viewed through Adobe Reader or Acrobat versions 9.0 or higher, it will reveal that a digital signature has been applied to the document. Adobe Reader and Acrobat use a blue ribbon across the top of the document to indicate document has not been tampered with and is therefore authentic.

Mac users: When viewing an official electronic diploma, the software utilizes Adobe's secure certified PDF technology, and therefore may only be viewed using the free Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat 9.0 or higher. The default Mac preview application will not display the document correctly.

Note: You can right-click a signature field in the Signatures panel to do most signature-related tasks, including adding, clearing, and validating signatures. In some cases, however, the signature field becomes locked after you sign it.

When digital signatures are validated, an icon appears in the document message bar to indicate the signature status. You can inspect additional status details in the signatures panel and in the signature properties dialog box.

The Signatures panel displays information about each digital signature in the current document and the change history of the document since the first digital signature. Each digital signature has an icon identifying its verification status. Verification details are listed beneath each signature and can be viewed by expanding the signature. The Signatures panel also provides information about the time the document was signed, and trust and signer details.

Dartmouth provides Official electronic Transcripts ("eTranscripts") in certified PDF format for all current Undergraduate A&S students. These eTranscripts are official documents that contain Dartmouth's digital signature and can be instantly validated. You must use Adobe Reader to view electronic transcripts.

Note to Mac and Linux users: To view an electronic transcript, you must use Adobe Reader. The electronic transcript cannot be viewed with other PDF viewers.

If the blue ribbon indicates that the document is Invalid, then the document should be rejected. The invalid status could be due to several reasons, such as an inauthentic digital signature or an alteration to the document. In all cases, reject a document that is Invalid.

If the blue ribbon indicates that the validity of the document is Unknown, make sure the computer has an active internet connection. If there is a properly working internet connection and the digital signature cannot be validated, reject the document.

Note: The Official eTranscript is considered Official in PDF format only. If printed, the word "VOID" will appear repeatedly to indicate that the paper copy is not an Official institutional document.

All official electronic transcripts from Stanford University have been digitally signed and therefore contain special characteristics. When the document is viewed through Adobe Reader and Acrobat versions 9.0 or higher, it will reveal that a digital signature has been applied to the document.

A document that contains a digital signature can be instantly validated. Document validity will be displayed via a blue ribbon on the notification bar across the top of the Adobe Reader. On older versions of the Adobe reader, the blue ribbon will be displayed on a pop-up screen and in the lower left corner of the frame of the application.

The blue ribbon symbol is your assurance that the digital signature is valid and authentic: the author of the document is known to the certification authority and the person or institution represented by the digital signature is true and authentic. The blue ribbon also confirms that the document has not been altered.

If you receive a notice that your document verification is invalid, it means the digital signature is not authentic, or the document has been altered. The digital signature could have been revoked for some reason, or the document could have expired. In all cases, a document with an invalid display should be rejected.

To activate the pop-up screens in either Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat to view the status of a document that has a digital signature (described above), open the application first, then open the document.

You canprotect the integrity of forms by allowing people to use certificatesto digitally sign forms. After the form is signed, the signed portioncannot be altered without invalidating the signature. The digitalsignature invokes a third-party signature handler that providesthe required digital signature functionality.

When the signature is verified, the individual's public key isused to decrypt the signed data and to obtain the digest value. The new digest value is calculated against the received documentby using the same algorithm of the signing process. If the two digestvalues do not match, this means that the data has been tamperedwith since the form was signed, and the verification fails.
