As most know, I wear a second hat as administrator for the Michigan Friend Center.  It's with that hat on that I am writing this message:

Hi, all -- I have some not great news regarding bringing a bottle of wine for personal consumption to the soup on Sunday.  MFC board president Steve Daut asked me to contact MFC's insurance company to determine whether the Center is covered if people bring alcohol.  The insurance company was discouraging.  If people are going to consume alcohol here, the Center needs to have a liquor liability insurance policy.  In order to obtain a liquor liability policy, the center would need to have a liquor license issued by the State Liquor Commission.  Since the Center has neither, it won't work to have people bring wine to the soup on Sunday.  In addition, it appears that a group using the center would need to have their own liquor liability policy that provides Host Liquor Liability coverage.

Sincerely,

Carolyn Holland

P.S. As Lucy pointed out to me at breakfast this morning, the Chelsea Depot is somehow managing to allow alcohol at their functions.  Since the board has already expressed an interest in finding out whether we can allow people to bring champagne to their own weddings, I will suggest talking to someone from the Depot to find out how they handle it.
