At the end of July 2020 I received a 'cold' phone call by a Toledo-area
company representing themselves as an installer of premium quality
cellulose insulation that very likely could reduce my heating costs by
around 50%.  Having researched insulation thoroughly, and also having
less than a couple inches of compacted cellulose in my 1500 sq ft attic,
I definitely wanted to listen to what they had to offer.

Two men spent the afternoon giving me their info, with props, showing
the superiority of their Applegate cellulose insulation, made from
recycled magazines, and guaranteed not to compact for 30 years.  They
had a model house, half insulated with this cellulose and half insulated
with fiberglass, so you could see how well their product held the model
room temperature vs the fiberglass, after they blew hot air in and we
watched the thermometers behave. They were able to describe the entire
process of laying cardboard baffles and vents to let the cellulose
breathe.  They promised to add enough insulation in my attic to meet the
R-49 standard, and they guaranteed their work and the product for 30
years.  All of my questions were answered by them.  So I went ahead with
the project.

So, September 5th, the IES crew of 2 men were able to do the job in a
little more than 3 hours.  This was amazing to me as my photos will
show, because most people believe my attic to be inaccessible to human
beings!  These guys were both at least 5 ft 10 and were in amazing
physical shape, and said they do this work every day... I am very happy
with their work.

The only reservation I have about recommending them, is that now you
have to research two companies, because my invoice was from EnerSol, but
IES (Instant Energy Solutions) did the work. When asked about why
EnerSol was billing me they said they had just recently been purchased
by Enersol. So even though they are owned by Enersol, they were still
doing business as IES or at least were on Sept 5 2020...

I had IES insulate my home this year. They couldn’t do the attic because is was too short and we would have had to build them access. I wanted the insulation to keep the upstairs cooler in the summer. It made only a moderate difference. Any ideas?

No, I don't have a whole house fan. I've heard both good and bad things about it. Do you have one?
I've had my house for 20 yrs and have always used a technique of opening the windows at night and shutting them in the morning. Normally there are only a couple of unbearably hot nights in the summer but this year it seemed worse before I had the insulation done. Now, it is can still get too hot but is about 10 degrees cooler at night in the summer.

We have a whole house fan. It helps. We do what you do with the windows, but we also use the fan for an hour or two on some evenings to cool the house faster.
