Subject: Action Alert: NSF and Peer Review
Reply-To: ghar...@BLOOMU.EDU

Dear Members of the Philosophy of Science Association,

As you probably know, the chairman of the Committee on Science, Space and
Technology has requested the peer review reports of 5 grants awarded under
the National Science Foundation¹s Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and
Economic Sciences (the division under which Science, Technology and Society
resides). The Philosophy of Science Association joined the History of
Science Society and numerous sister societies in sending a letter to
congressional leaders and committee members protesting this action. The next
step is for our U. S. members to contact their representatives, letting them
know that this request threatens to undermine the peer review process. We
should be clear that the action we are requesting is directed at a specific
policy (protection of the integrity of the peer review process) and is
apolitical.

With the help of our colleagues at the National Humanities Alliance, the
History of Science Society has created an action alert to assist you in
contacting your representatives. Simply click on the link
<http://cqrcengage.com/nhalliance/app/write-a-letter?6&engagementId=5186>
and fill in your address and the alert will be directed to your
representatives. (HSS has provided suggestive language for the alert, but
feel free to personalize it.)

As of this afternoon, the NSF had refused to provide the peer reports, but
this marks just the beginning of the process. Please take a few moments to
make your voice heard.

Thank you for your membership in PSA.
