Dear Colleagues,

My colleague in psychology, Susan Embretson (KU, then Georgia Tech, now back at KU), conducts human factors research (e.g., developing tests to assess airline pilots' sensory and motor abilities). In reviewing the relevant literatures, she is sometimes aghast at the misuse of terms or variations in their use (e.g., “validity”), which leads her to conduct occasional reviews of textbook literatures. Textbooks, though, are notoriously difficult to find; libraries do not generally hold them. Susan has her sources, however (see the accompanying attachment), about which she wrote me in last May:

I am attaching the resources for my book search [see her attachment above]. They are ordered by what I find most useful. It is true that Thriftbooks.com charges for books. However, when the average cost for me has been probably about $11 or $12, it is close to free. They have 19 million books!!!!!

I have not used her sources yet, but a colleague who did wrote me that he found a first edition of a long out-of-print 1970s textbook at Thriftbooks.com for a pittance. If you use textbooks in your historiography (e.g., textbook history of social psychology, individual differences), Susan’s sources might be useful – might be.

Best,

   Ed

It is Saturday again and time for Trivedi winery event.  Yes, Mire Pral was excellent last week.

The food truck was not.  However, tonight will have a better food truck available and an OK band

(Rip Tide?).  My favorite was Levee Town, a rocking blues band from K.C.

Anyway, I hope that these resources work for you.  I have spent lots of time searching for about 100+

textbooks to analyze for appropriate presentation of the test validity concept.  But somehow the

search process seems like fun.

Yes, retirement is us – alike! Your resources for my history project would be valuable. Thanks also for the thriftbook.com link. It could also be of great value. I hope Mir Pral and the weather were good – I think the weather was. Be glad you are not in Atlanta tonight. Main water mains broke. Onward...

Great to see you too!  We have many topics in common and similar ideas about "retirement".

I will send you some sources for references for your history project

early next week.  For one now, Thriftbooks.com is amazing.....some of my needed

old text books for my project cost less than $10.

Also, hopefully it does not rain tomorrow so that I can go to Trivedi winery and see Mire Pral

play.
