The poster showed a women dressed as goddess 'Kaali' smoking, depicting her as a "smoking women". Soon after Leena shared the poster, she faced backlash on social media. The poster also showed goddess 'Kaali' holding an LGBTQ community flag. Amid the controversy, Aga Khan Museum has given an apology. Indian Embassy in Canada has also told to withdraw provocative material. Leena Manimekalai has directed several documentaries and some of her famous projects include Mathamma, Parai, Breaking The Shackles, Love Lost, A Hole in the Bucket, and many more. She has also won awards in many National as well as International Film festivals. Leena tweeted and shared the poster of the film, she said that the film was a part of the 'Rhythms of Canada' segment at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto. Social media users demanded to withdraw the poster. Several other films and web series have also gotten into trouble due to their controversial posters and scenes. Saif Ali Khan's web series "Tandav" and Anurag Basu's film "Ludo" are one of them.
FIRs have been filed against 'Kaali' movie director Leena Manimekalai for her controversial film poster. The FIRs have been filed by the Delhi Police's Intelligence Fusion & Strategic Operations (IFSO) wing and the Uttar Pradesh Police. A complaint was registered on July 2, by Vineet Jindal, who is a Delhi-based lawyer. The lawyer also tweeted the same. He said that this is Leena Manimekalai intentional act to hurt the sentiments of people. Earlier a police complaint was filed by BJP leader Shivam Chhabra. According to the Delhi Police, two complaints were received against the filmmaker. An FIR has been filed under IPC 153A and 295A. However, on the second complaint, the police said that a probe is underway and necessary action will be taken.
Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Tuesday gave a statement regarding the 'Kaali' controversy which has increased the ongoing outrage. She was attending the India Today conclave in Kolkata, where the politician said that it is up to individuals how they view their gods. She added, "For me, Goddess Kali is a meat-eating and alcohol-accepting goddess. And if you go to Tarapith you will see sadhus smoking That is the version of Kali people worship. I, within Hinduism, being a Kali worshipper, have the right to imagine Kali in that way; that is my freedom". After her remarks, TMC distanced itself from the comments and also condemned her statement. Mahua had even unfollowed TMC on Twitter after this. However the Krishnanagar MP clarified that she "never backed any film and poster or mentioned the word smoking".
The 'Kaali' poster controversy is increasing day by day. Hashtags are trending on social media to arrest the director Leena Manimekalai. The controversy is also being connected to the ongoing Nupur Sharma controversy. Some are calling it a disrespect to the right of freedom of speech and expression while some are supporting Leena.
A Delhi court has summoned filmmaker Leena Manimekalai on a plea seeking injunction against her upcoming movie Kaali for allegedly depicting Hindu goddess in an uncalled way in its posters and promotional videos.
Undersigned (judge) is of the opinion that the defendant needs to be heard before passing any order against them. Therefore, issue summons of the suit and notice of the injunction application, the judge said.
The petition seeking a permanent and mandatory injunction against the filmmaker alleged that the accused depicted the Hindu goddess in a very uncalled way in the poster and promo video of their upcoming Movie Kaali.
Further, the poster of the film depicts Hindu goddess Kali smoking cigarette which not only hurts the religious sentiments of common Hindu but is also against basics of morality and decency, it claimed.
The plea added that the poster was tweeted by Manimekalai from her Twitter handle. The plea, filed by Raj Gaurav, also sought an interim injunction to restrain Manimekalai temporarily from depicting goddesses in the way they have been depicted in the poster and video, and the tweet.
Both Uttar Pradesh Police and Delhi Police registered FIRs against filmmaker Leena Manimekalai for her movie Kaali, which several complainants alleged had disrespectful depiction of Hindu gods. The UP Police charges were registered on criminal conspiracy, offence in the place of worship, deliberately hurting religious sentiments, and intention to provoke breach of peace. The Delhi Police IFSO unit filed the FIR under IPC sections 153A and 295A.
Manimekalai, however, said that she will continue to use her voice fearlessly till she is alive. The poster has led to a social media storm with the hashtag 'Arrest Leena Manimekalai', allegations that the filmmaker is hurting religious sentiments and a member of a group going by the name 'Gau Mahasabha' saying he has filed a complaint with Delhi Police.
In response to the attacks, the Toronto-based director hit back to say she was willing to pay with her life. "I have nothing to lose. Till the time I live, I wish to live with a voice that speaks what I believe without fear. If the price for that is my life, it can be given," Manimekalai wrote in a Twitter post in Tamil in response to an article on the controversy.
The Madurai-born filmmaker had shared the poster of Kaali on the microblogging site on Saturday and said the film was part of the 'Rhythms of Canada' segment at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto. Manimekalai also urged people to watch the film to understand the context behind the poster. "The film is about the events during Kaali's strolls through the streets of Toronto city one fine evening. If they watch the movie, they will put the hashtag 'love you Leena Manimekalai' rather than 'Arrest Leena Manimekalai'," she added in reply to another article.
Ajay Gautam, a member of the 'Gau Mahasabha', sent reporters a copy of his police complaint against the filmmaker for allegedly presenting the goddess in a "derogatory and offensive manner" thereby hurting "religious sentiments of millions of devotees including the complainant".
But social-media users claimed the image was disrespectful and hurtful to followers of the religion, who represent the majority in India under a government that has aggressively promoted Hindu interests.
It seems unlikely that any of the critics have actually seen the movie. The reaction came in response to a tweet issued by Manimekalai that included an image of the poster. It portrays Kaali taking a drag from a cigarette, her eyes closed in apparent concentration, a Pride flag in the background.

A Toronto-based filmmaker from India has been granted protection from India's highest court after facing multiple police investigations and death threats over a depiction of a Hindu goddess on her movie poster.
After petitioning the Supreme Court to quash what she referred to as the "malicious" FIRs, Manimekalai says the resulting order vindicates her and gives her some legal protection, which will allow her to finally return home to India this summer.
The interim court order issued Jan. 20 was extended for three weeks on Feb. 20 pending another court date. It stated "no coercive steps" like arrests should be taken against Manimekalai "on the basis of the FIRs which have been instituted against her."
"She has full protection for now," said Indira Unninayar, Manimekalai's lawyer in India. She says police have been taking action based on FIRs recently, especially in cases regarding religious sentiments.
As part of her graduate program at York University, Manimekalai submitted Kaali to Toronto Metropolitan University's "Under the Tent" film series on multiculturalism. It was one of 18 works chosen to be screened at Toronto's Aga Khan Museum.
The director's tweet went viral, prompting furious responses from some on social media, with many calling for her arrest. The High Commission of India in Ottawa, which essentially functions as the Indian embassy, got involved, urging authorities to "take action" against what it called a "disrespectful depiction" of Kali.
Painful to see Kaali poster by filmmaker Leena Manimekalai.
Past few years, traditional anti-Hindu and anti-India groups in Canada have joined forces resulting in Hinduphobic articles in media & attacks on our Hindu temples.
Apology from @AgaKhanMuseum is welcome & appreciated
