Long ago, the four main areas, Calpheon, Serendia, Balenos, and Mediah, were at peace. This all changed when the Black Death started spreading via merchants from Valencia, in an area east of Mediah that controlled trading. Many around the world died of the plague. Some who did not, were expelled due to the black death causing paranoia. Eventually, the three of the main areas made an alliance and began a war that lasted for 30 years; with Mediah profiting the most by harvesting black stones and trading it to the others.

After the war, the alliance slowly started to conduct trades with Valencia once again. Tensions arose when the other areas discovered the importance of black stones. Desperate to gain wealth, they began to search for black stones as well. Calpheon had no area that harbored the precious black stones, thus they stole from the rest. This created further conflicts with Valencia, due to the fact that Valencia has a vast Black Desert which holds many black stones.[18]

We were 30km out of Qasr Mushash, an ancient Roman frontier post on the eastern outskirts of Amman and the site of Jordan's proposed new capital. The rolling hills of the Levant had turned into a flat, black volcanic desert. Suddenly, a military drone zoomed overhead, perhaps on its way to surveil a battlefield somewhere in nearby Iraq or Syria. A few minutes down the road was the Azraq Wetland Reserve and the Shaumari Wildlife Reserve, where we mingled with gazelles and watched military cargo planes fly over the horizon.

This is Jordan's Black Desert, also known as Harrat al-Sham, a frontier in more ways than one. The harsh, landscape tells the story of past and present civilisations who have tried to tame it. Roman ruins, half-finished concrete structures, modern military bases and refugee camps dot the highway. And out past a certain point, the desert swallows up any sign of mankind; barely anyone lives here but nomadic Bedouins, who roam among neolithic "hunting kites" (animal fences set up by prehistoric hunters thousands of years earlier) and ancient Safaitic inscriptions, written in an Arabic dialect that predates the rise of Islam.

Although less famous than other Jordanian attractions like Petra and the Pillars of Wisdom, the Black Desert offers visitors millions of years of natural and human history, including a magnificent wetland in the desert fed by a fragile oasis.

The project may forever transform the beautiful, haunted landscape of the Black Desert. Or, given the difficulties Jordan has with water supply, the New City may become yet another abandoned monument to the harshness of the desert.

In late antiquity, the Black Desert was on the frontier between the Roman and Persian Empires and saw nearly five centuries of intense combat before the Islamic caliphate pushed both superpowers out of the region. The desert castles may have been military bases, trading posts, hunting lodges or some combination of all three.

As we ventured further out into the desert, the towns disappeared completely, leaving only campsites for Bedouins and the most adventurous tourists. Even in the deep wilderness, however, there are signs of ancient human habitation. The region is marked by Safaitic rock inscriptions and hunting kites.

Standing at the parched site of the New City, the fenced-in remnants of the Azraq Oasis and the thousands of years of manmade ruins in the Black Desert, we understood the harshness of the environment. But we also saw the perseverance of the few people who live in and around the desert, and who try to call it home.

Text description provided by the architects. This project began with an e-mail and a meeting in fall of 2008 for a house in Yucca Valley, which is located near Palm Springs, east of Los Angeles in the high desert near the Joshua Tree National Park. We had completed two projects in Yucca Valley and occasionally received inquiries about projects in the desert. In the midst of the economic downturn typically these inquiring led nowhere. We had just had our second child and things were looking rather uncertain.

Beyond the technical and regulatory challenges of building on the site- several previous owners had tried and given up there was the challenge of how to build appropriately on such a sublime and pristine site. It is akin to building a house in a natural cathedral. Our client had given us a brief but compelling instruction at the start of the process- to build a house like a shadow. This had a very specific relevance to the desert area where the sunlight is often so bright that the eye's only resting place is the shadows.

A long process of research began with the clients showing us images of houses they found intriguing- mostly contemporary houses that showed a more aggressive formal and spatial language than the mid-century modern homes that have become the de-facto style of the desert southwest. We looked back at precedents for how architects have dealt with houses located in similar topography and found that generally they either sought to integrate the built work into the landscape, as in the work of Frank Lloyd Wright and later Rudolf Shindler or to hold the architecture aloof from the landscape as in the European modernist tradition of Mies van der Rohe.

Desert varnish is the thin red-to-black coating found on exposed rock surfaces in arid regions. Varnish is composed of clay minerals, oxides and hydroxides of manganese and/or iron, as well as other particles such as sand grains and trace elements. The most distinctive elements are manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe).

The sources for desert varnish components come from outside the rock, most likely from atmospheric dust and surface runoff. Streaks of black varnish often occur where water cascades over cliffs. No major varnish characteristics are caused by wind.

Reef Capital Partners is developing Black Desert Resort. Black Desert Resort, upon buildout, will offer a full hotel and conference center overlooking the beauty of Snow Canyon State Park and the championship course; 1,000+ residences; miles of on-property trails; a wellness spa; and 80,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space. The property will also feature 75 single-family estate lots mingled in the black lava flows and approximately 214,000 square feet of commercial space, with the amenities of the resort center available for full-time residents.

A black desert robe is an item of clothing that players may find useful when doing the Shadow of the Storm quest. They can make it by using black dye on a normal desert robe. This can also be done with a desert shirt to create a black desert shirt.

The quest requires players to be wearing at least three black garments, in order to look evil. Players may already be wearing a set of desert robes (since the main part of the quest takes place in the Kharidian Desert), and black mushrooms can be found locally.

I never thought a course as flat as Black Desert could overtake more dramatic settings at Sand Hollow and Wolf Creek, but that's what great design can do. Weiskopf's last course is a fitting tribute to his legacy as an excellent architect. His routing through the black lava rocks is a masterclass on how to maximize a dramatic setting and make the course fit into such a beautiful landscape without overpowering it. There's so many cool holes - six that feature water, two signature par 4s, a nod to the famous Postage Stamp at Royal Troon, a par 5 that winds through black rock like a snake. Once the clubhouse and comfort stations are complete, this place will be one of the best golf experiences west of the Rockies. Upcoming PGA Tour and LPGA Tour events will put the golfing public on blast. Put this on your bucket list.

Developed by Reef Capital Partners, Black Desert Resort is a premier destination offering an array of attractions, including over 3,000 hotel rooms and residences, an extensive trail network through ancient lava flows, a waterpark, a wellness spa, abundant retail and dining options. The resort features a remarkable 19-hole golf course designed by Tom Weiskopf, a 36-hole illuminated putting course and a lakeside amphitheater.
