Theslope of gravity hills is an optical illusion,[2] although sites are often accompanied by claims that magnetic or supernatural forces are at work. The most important factor contributing to the illusion is a completely or mostly obstructed horizon. Without a horizon, it becomes difficult for a person to judge the slope of a surface, as a reliable reference point is missing. Objects which one would normally assume to be more or less perpendicular to the ground, such as trees, may be leaning, offsetting the visual reference.[3]

A 2003 study looked into how the absence of a horizon can skew the perspective on gravity hills, by recreating a number of antigravity places in the lab to see how volunteers would react. As a conclusion, researchers from Universities of Padova and Pavia in Italy found that without a true horizon in sight, the human brain could be tricked by common landmarks such as trees and signs.[4]

A gravity hill is a place where a slight downhill slope appears to be an uphill slope due to the layout of the surrounding land, creating the optical illusion that water flows uphill or that a car left out of gear will roll uphill. Many of these sites have no specific name and are often called just "Gravity Hill", "Magnetic Hill", "Magic Road" or something similar.

Thank you for posting this! We went yesterday! You failed to mention the emence energy force and pressure you feel in that area! It was awesome! And creepy all at once! There were also other people there! At one point we had to accelerate going down hill!

You can not use a bubble level to prove what direction is uphill or downhill in this situation. A level works with gravity, pulling the water to one end. In this case, you have an error in your testing.

before putting baby powder on the back of your car wipe it down with windex to get a clean slate. Watch one of the episodes of Ghost Adventures they did the same thing and they wiped down one back half of the car an left the other side in wiped. Come to find out the so called Ghost finger prints are really your own the oil from your hands are leaving invisable finger prints the powder absorbs the oil and then leaves finger prints. When Ghost Adventure did it they saw the side that they wiped clean had no finger prints an the other side did

Past hop trellises, fruit orchards and rye fields, down a lonely stretch of road near Prosser, Washington is a mystery spot. Shift a car into neutral at the base of this hill and it will roll to the top all by itself, or so they say. This is a gravity hill, sometimes called an anti-gravity hill or a magnetic hill. It is one of a handful of places all over the world where gravity appears to work backwards.

So they build their own gravity hill, a tabletop diorama version. It consists of a few boards slanted at various grades inside a box dressed up with model trees, grass, a blue screen to simulate the sky, and a pin hole to look through. Volunteers would look through the pinhole and report what they saw.

There are two common types of gravity hills. The most common type is caused by the presence of contextual inclines. This type usually looks like two flanking roads, one sloping sharply downhill and the other sloping slightly downhill.

The gravity hill in Prosser is the other type. Instead of the illusion being caused by two flanking roads of different grades, this illusion is caused by a false horizon. Prosser sits on the foothills of the Lower Yakima Valley. Looking out from this hill, you can see the other side of the valley, with hills low in the background.

However, to actually do the hill properly, you need to be facing the opposite direction, so drive a bit further down the road until it dead ends and turn around there. Then, drive back to the 1015 sign to experience Gravity Hill.

A gravity hill is an optical illusion where you believe you are going up hill when you a really going downhill . This is one of those places , you start coasting and it looks like you are going up hill . You need to be faceing south away from Lower Mountain Rd . It can be a little odd or even creepy the first time . This is even on wikipidia and they had the location wrong last time checked . Every once in a while some one will stop me and ask me where it is .

Conditioning played an important part in preparation. My horse Hootenanny and I were up to galloping two miles without stopping by early July. We monitored our distances and continued making progress.

I suppose that there are other Gravity Hills throughout the country and each one has a story of its own. At the top of this Gravity Hill are the remains of a sidewalk where a house used to be. Legend has it, that a man killed his wife in the house and her ghost remains in there. She is filled with anger and reaches out to cars as they drive by in an effort to pull them to her.

Since I was able to observe this from the top of my horse, I could see it was only an optical illusion. In reality, cars were not starting at the bottom of Gravity Hill and then moving upward. Their starting point was actually on the down slope of the previous hill. They coasted down from the previous hill with enough momentum to start up Gravity Hill.

My feet hung out of my stirrups and my reins were loosened so Hoot could stretch his neck. The air was still humid from the storm that had passed through during the night and the black top road still smelled like rain. The clouds remained dark and there was a misty fog that blanketed the country side.

As the figure came out of the fog, I could see that it was a woman wearing a dark dress. Her arms were folded across her chest and her hair was white and wild. I could not see her facial expression, but I could see that her eyes were directly fixed on me.

My arms and legs froze and Hoot stopped and focused on the figure that continued moving toward us. My horse became aware of my catatonic state. He turned his head and nudged my foot waking me back to my senses.

A gravity hill is a place where gravity seems to be working against itself; where gravity seems to temporarily not work as it should. There are hundreds of gravity hills around the world and they are characterized as places where a geographical optical illusion has been created.

Some gravity hills are reported to not just be optical illusions, but sites of supernatural activity as well. Most of these are local myths and legends, but guides and fans of the local spots swear by their tales.

According to researchers, gravity hills tend be located in areas where the stretch of road is relatively short (50-90 m), not too wide, and surrounded by a natural landscape devoid of buildings. These geographical aspects combine to create an optical illusion that gives visitors the impression that a downhill slope is actually uphill.

California, to name just one location of mystery spots and gravity hills, is chock full of anomalies ranging from old mining roads to the Golden Gate Bridge. One particular gravity hill, Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz, has been attracting visitors since the 1930s and is the site of more than a few eerie feelings and misunderstood sightings.

In South Bend, Indiana another gravity hill is the subject of folklore. In 1973 account, Stephen F. Zmyslo submitted a report about a hill outside South Bend, Indiana, where a car in neutral rolls up the hill backwards. Zmyslo noted that the legend claims that a ghost inhabits the location, and that if the motorist applies the brakes, the ghost will push the car up the slope or steal the gasoline.
