Good Monday to ya!

So... I've been doing some reflecting about what I would send as the Whiparound for this week (after all, I had two weeks to think about it :)). We're getting into crunchtime and I want this reflection to be worthwhile for you... so I'm going to give you a few different options. Choose your own ending (you may def choose more than one!).

#1. I just finished reading Lean In (I know, I read very slowly) and Sheryl's first question to her readers is: "What would you do if you weren't afraid?" Answer this question as it relates to your Theory of Change.

#2. I was ranting to my bf about how people's social ideologies can really get in the way of doing actual and good work. He said, "Hate, jealousy, and violence are secondary emotions that stem out of greed. But why would you every want to stomp out greed? Greed is a survival mechanism that leads to innovation and change. Those social justice ideologies are oftentimes naive and require a very closed off space to rationalize how the world works according to their point of view. They need to take an introductory course in Macro Economics."
What do you think about David's quote? Does it limit or open possibilities to your Theory of Change?

#3. Tell us a story about a time in the classroom that was meaningful to you. What happened? Who did it involve? What aspects of the story do you value the most? What do you think that says about you and your values? How does it relate to you Theory of Change?

#4. Reflect on yourself for a minute. If you had to "label" yourself in high school, how would you label yourself? If you had to "label" yourself in undergrad, how would you label yourself? If you had to "label" yourself now, how would you label yourself? What changed? What caused these changes? What does this say about the way you perceive how others perceive you? How have other people's perceptions of you changed the way you see yourself? Most importantly, what has stayed consistent? What does that say about you?

#5. Share a pretty song, youtube video, quote, etc. to lift up the spirits of those reading your email.

Alright y'all. Hope one of these speaks to you. Let me know if you need any clarification or help. I'm going to try to respond to one of these as well and will send it out tomorrow.

luh u,

Amy

LOVE your choice board, Amy! I feel empowered. :) I would love to just sit and ponder these questions all day with you guys...but, in the interest of time and reality, I picked a couple to chime in on...

#1- If I wasn't afraid, I would fully COMMIT to my theory of change, and not second-guess where my passions are leading me.
If I wasn't afraid, I would ask my Professor, who always asks great questions and has so much knowledge from being a Superintendent, to serve on my board of advisors.

a)This video is beautiful to me in a- wow- we are all so alike, women are hard on themselves but kind to others, beauty is in the eye of the beholder kind of way.  It makes me feel optimistic about the world (something I know I need a lot of this week).

b) This is purely because I think it's hysterical, and just ran across it last week. If you appreciate silly things, I hope this makes you smile.

#6                                        Your L1 score is: 10
Your R1 score is: 14
Your L2 score is: 21
Your R2 score is: 15

You have a very strong preference for order and understanding the right way of doing things, because you rely heavily on the bottom-left side of your brain (L2). If you don't already know how people have been successful tackling simliar challenges to the ones you're facing, you make sure you find out by asking people who have done it before or by doing as much research as you can before jumping in. You're good at creating a plan and executing on your plan. More than most, you enjoy using models that create structure. If the model this assessment uses appeals to you, you are likely to share it with your colleagues as a useful tool for understanding how people work together.
-------
I was surprised at this result, because I am normally inclined to associate myself with relationship-building(R2), but this clearly shows that structure and planning are much higher.  I knew I enjoyed operating that way, but it's eye-opening how dominant that is in my "professional" life.  Thinking about it, I do get anxious when things aren't well researched, planned, and orderly, which makes sense.
Also, like Jesse and Jane, it's been difficult for me to pinpoint and stick to one Theory of Change, but as this notes- I like to do my research, see models, and talk to a lot of people before creating a plan, so that actually makes me feel a little better. It's not that I am avoiding it, but I am just making sure it's right before jumping in. Looking at it in a positive light is nice--since, I know I tend to get frustrated with myself more than reward myself.

Glad to hear all of yours are safe, Jesse- and hope it's the same for all of you. Sending my love from CA...

Hey All!

Amy, I love the "choose your own adventure" spirit of this weeks email whip! Such a great idea and such strong, creative questions- cheers to you!

So, I'm actually going to go with option #5 and share a song I've been loving and that has been lifting my spirit this week.  It's Michael Franti's new song "I'm Alive."  I don't think there is a music video yet, but you can listen to it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqEFy3Js4dw

Just the lyrics "Life sounds like: I'm alive, I'm alive, I'm alive, I'm alive" speak to my soul this week and get me up and dancing!  I hope you all enjoy it too!

So grateful for this group and the thought provoking, spirit and love you all have already shared this week.

In appreciation,
Jess

Hey Everyone!

I hope you are having a good weekend! Mine has consisted of sitting in front of a computer screen working on my thesis while longing to be outside in the absolutely beautiful weather we have had here this last week. I accidentally told my client, the former governor of Colorado, that I would have a rough draft of my report for him ready by Tuesday. Needless to say I really do not want to disappoint this guy, so I have been working my butt off. :) So I am very sorry for missing the whiparound this week. I should be able to breathe again Tuesday afternoon and I promise a reply to last weeks whip around and launch us into this week's whiparound as well.

Looking forward to it!
