Subject: [Decolonize] Plans for Oct. 12th DtL Meeting

Hi Everyone!

Per our last meeting, we did change our plans and postponed a viewing of "Guns, Germs, and Steel" for a later date, with Umang's full approval, when we can more appropriately deal with the European value system and perspective threaded throughout that film.  Instead, here are our plans for the next two meetings (remembering that we are continuing to work with Andrea Smith's analysis of "Heteropatriarchy and the Three Pillars of White Supremacy this year):

This Friday, Oct. 12th:  In honor of Indigenous Peoples Day, we will watch a couple of clips from the film "La Otra Conquista" (The Other Conquest) and use these clips for an in-depth discussion of the impact of colonization on both the colonized and the colonizer (the full film is in Spanish with English subtitles and does have depictions of graphic violence and nudity/sexuality).  This is a film that was celebrated in Mexico and critically acclaimed as a work of art in a dramatic depiction of the Spanish invasion and their oppression of the Aztec people (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Otra_Conquista).  Following the discussion, we will have a ritual to honor our ancestors, our struggles, and to celebration our Decolonize to Liberate movement.  Clyde, Maria Cristina, and Ukumbwa will be facilitating different sections of the night.  Consider bringing something for the potluck that celebrates your own indigenous heritage!  We will plan to meet from 6-8:30PM and as usual at the First Parish in Cambridge, 10 Church Street (go to the far door on Church Street and ring the doorbell for entrance).  The church is at the intersection of Church Street and Mass Ave and is accessible via the Harvard Square T-Stop.

Friday, Oct. 28th:  We will continue with the second episode of "Race: The Power of an Illusion," which is titled "The Story We Tell" (http://www.pbs.org/race/000_About/002_04-about-02.htm).  Yamilla will again facilitate and she is asking that we read the attached chapter one from White By Law (it is attached as both a PDF and a RTF/Word document for those who need to read it in different ways).  We will need to identify a process facilitator for Yamilla that night.  We will plan to meet from 6-8PM and as usual at the First Parish in Cambridge, 10 Church Street (go to the far door on Church Street and ring the doorbell for entrance).  The church is at the intersection of Church Street and Mass Ave and is accessible via the Harvard Square T-Stop.

Our November activities and dates are to be determined, but the likely dates would be Nov. 9th and Nov. 30th (the latter because of the holiday the previous week).  There are other activities we should discuss, such as celebrating/honoring "The Day of the Dead" early in the month and the "National Day of Mourning" at Plymouth.

Also attached is our shorthand version of our ways of being document as a reminder of how we agree to be with one another when we meet and considerations that should be made by facilitators/process facilitators.

Friday, Nov. 9th:  We will continue with the third, and generally recognized as the most powerful, episode of "Race: The Power of an Illusion," which is titled "The House We Live In" (http://www.pbs.org/race/000_About/002_04-about-03.htm).  Yamilla will again facilitate and she is asking that we continue to read the attached chapter one from White By Law (it is attached as both a PDF and a RTF/Word document for those who need to read it in different ways).  We will need to identify a process facilitator for Yamilla that night.  We will plan to meet from 6-8PM and as usual at the First Parish in Cambridge, 10 Church Street (go to the far door on Church Street and ring the doorbell for entrance).  The church is at the intersection of Church Street and Mass Ave and is accessible via the Harvard Square T-Stop.  We will be meeting downstairs in one of the basement rooms this Friday!

Thursday, Nov. 22nd:  National Day of Mourning - Keori is organizing rides to Plymouth.  See her separate emails regarding this to the Decolonize to Liberate lists.

Friday, Nov. 30th:  Activity to be determined, several suggestions are on the table.

Due to the holidays in December, here are some two suggested dates to meet in December - Friday, Dec. 7th and Friday, Dec. 21st and then starting to meet again in January 2013.  I recommend we pause on one of the available dates after Nov. 9th to have a general discussion and planning meeting to map out a couple more months and process our last few months as well.
