The Tetuwan Lakota Strong Heart Warrior Society is coming to Unsettle Boston! Join us in welcoming Canupa Gluha Mani, Ana Oian Amets (bios below), and their families to Boston for two provocative evenings of music, discussion, and resistance. They will address topics of Lakota independence, decolonization skills, and resisting the settler state!

Bios:
Canupa Gluha Mani
Canupa Gluha Mani is a fluent Lakota language speaker, cultural knowledge keeper, and Itacan headman of Cante Tenza - the traditional Strong Heart Warrior Society of the Lakota nation on Pine Ridge. He is also Lead Representative of the Tetuwan Oglala Judicial Council. At the age of 9 he was involved in the militant takeover of Mount Rushmore, and at 12, he fought in the 1973 Occupation of Wounded Knee. He has since led the 2000 and 2009 takeovers of the Red Cloud Government Building to fight corruption in Oglala Sioux tribal government. in 2011, he led elders in a 34 day occupation of the Porcupine Elderly Meals building to protest elderly abuse sparking crisis management from the White House. He was the traditional voice alongside Russell Means and is contemporary with many of the more famous AIM leaders. He annually leads the blockade to shut down alcohol sales in White Clay, Nebraska and has led numerous protests of grassroots people to stem the devastating tide of illegal drugs and alcohol on Pine Ridge. He frequently visits prisons and conferences to advocate for Native rights within the system.  In 2007, he was the only member of the Lakota delegation to Washington DC to destroy his BIA identification and withdraw from treaties with the United States government. Since then, the formation of an Independent Lakota Nation has grown and is prepared to assert sovereign jurisdiction over traditional Lakota territory. Each year he leads the collection and free distribution of shoes, winter coats, school supplies, food, and other support to Oglala Lakota elders, children and families.

The film "Red Cry" was created by The Strong Heart Lakota Solidarity Project. The documentary chronicles the lives of Lakota Elders and Oyate (people) in the face of ongoing genocide against the Lakota by government and corporate interests: Red Cry | Official Release | 2013

Ana Oian Amets
Nire izena Ana Oian Amets da, esan english Naomi Archer. I’ve been decolonizing for over 13 years– reawakening connection to the lifeway of my Iladurrak Aquitainian (proto-Basque) ancestors from the area known as southwest France. I’m also grateful for my ancestors from northern France, County Donegal in Ireland, and the Rhine River valley.

My decolonization process has been an amazing journey every day. I’ve been asked to confront the history and present-day impacts of my European people on lands not our own.  I’ve felt the loss of my own history and ancestors. And I’ve been challenged to find heart and my true self through immersion in Indigenous resistance struggles as an adopted member of the Lakota Cante Tenza Warrior Society and Independent Lakota Nation, coordinator for the Lakota Solidarity Project, and former co-founder of  the Four Directions Solidarity Network. I've been honored to work for human rights and social justice for more than 20 years.

Decolonization has created opportunities for deep listening to Native elders and activists, to explore Indigenous thought and philosophy with my Indigenous relatives of different nations, and to return back to the places of my ancestors to walk and listen to Amalur – Mother Earth.

As a consequence of these experiences, I’ve been humbled by the invitation to share decolonization practices in North America and Europe for groups and classes including at Haskell Indian Nations University,  Thunder Mountain Lenape Nation, Slavic Sorbian people (Germany), 2010 U.S. Social Forum in Detroit, National Conference on Organized Resistance, 2013 Tear Down the Walls National Gathering, and the 2013 Wild Roots/Feral Futures gathering.

To collect and share experiences and skills for decolonization, ancestral recovery, and unsettling settler privilege, I created and manage the Awakening the Horse People blog (awakeningthehorse.wordpress.com).
