Subject: Re: [Decolonize] Reminder: Next Meeting Friday, Sept. 14th for "The New Jim Crow" discussion

Reminder that there is no meeting of the Decolonize to Liberate Working Group this Friday the 7th, instead our next meeting will be the following Friday, February 14th per the below!  We are continuing to spend the year applying Andrea Smith's analysis of heteropatriarchy and the 3 pillars of white supremacy (slaveability/capitalism; genocide/colonialism; and orientalism/war) to various events and activities.

Friday, Sept. 14th: Connecting to the logic of slaveability/capitalism per the Andrea Smith articles/analysis, plan to start reading now The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander and we will view and discuss a film on this important new book (http://www.amazon.com/The-New-Crow-Incarceration-Colorblindness/dp/1595581030). "In this incisive critique, former litigator-turned-legal-scholar Michelle Alexander provocatively argues that we have not ended racial caste in America: we have simply redesigned it."  See also http://www.newjimcrow.com/about.html and the wikipedia article outline of chapters: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_Jim_Crow (if you don't have time to read the whole boo, this wikipedia outline of chapters is very good).  Ukumbwa and Patty will be co-facilitating.  Regular Friday meetings take place at the First Parish in Cambridge, 6-8PM normally, 10 Church Street, accessible via the Harvard Square T-Stop, go to the far church entrance on Church Street and ring the bell for entrance.

Monday, Sept. 17th thru Sept. 24th: A week of actions are being planned against Monsanto, particularly note there will be an event in Cambridge on Monday, Sept. 24th that we hope to get more information on shortly.  See the following websites in the meantime: http://occupy-monsanto.comhttp://www.youtube.com/user/occupymonsanto; http://smallplanet.org/feeds/september-17-2012-occupy-monsanto’s-global-week-action; http://www.organicconsumers.org/monsanto/action.cfm; and http://www.organicconsumers.org/monsanto/index.cfm.  (NOTE ALSO that Sept. 17th is the anniversary date of Occupy Wall Street and actions are planned in NYC that day too!)

Friday, Sept. 28th:  Connecting the logic of genocide/colonialism and the logic slaveability/capitalism in the arc of U.S. history and institutional racism, we will begin a 3-part once a month series of watching "Race: The Power of an Illusion," beginning with Episode One: "The Difference Between Us," which dispels the myth of any genetic basis to race (http://www.pbs.org/race/000_About/002_04-about-01.htm).  Regular Friday meetings take place at the First Parish in Cambridge, 6-8PM normally, 10 Church Street, accessible via the Harvard Square T-Stop, go to the far church entrance on Church Street and ring the bell for entrance.

Tuesday, Sept. 30th: Occupy Boston's Anniversary!

Hold the following dates in October: Monday, Oct. 8th Indigenous Peoples' Day; Friday, Oc. 12th and Friday, Oct. 26th (probable viewing of episode two of Race: The Power of an Illusion on the 26th).

Best wishes to those of you who are heading down to NYC tomorrow night for S17, but also a reminder for those who will be in town that the Decolonize to Liberate Working Group is meeting tomorrow night to discuss The New Jim Crow per below (there is a wikipedia link to an outline of the book below if you haven't had time to read it, and we will have a video of a Democracy Now interview with Michelle Alexander as well)!  We are continuing to spend the year applying Andrea Smith's analysis of heteropatriarchy and the 3 pillars of white supremacy (slaveability/capitalism; genocide/colonialism; and orientalism/war) to various decolonize to liberate events and activities.

(We'll also try to make some time to talk about our plan for activities in October, which could included continued discussion of The New Jim Crow.)  Regular Friday meetings take place at the First Parish in Cambridge, 6-8PM normally, 10 Church Street, accessible via the Harvard Square T-Stop, go to the far church entrance on Church Street and ring the bell for entrance.

On this past Friday, Sept. 14th, the Decolonize to Liberate working group met to discuss Michelle Alexander's book The New Jim Crow and we also watched a two-part interview of Michelle Alexander by Democracy Now.  Our thanks to Patty and Ukumbwa for their facilitation!  Here are the links to that two-part interview:

Additionally, Patty recommends the following two Bill Moyers' videos for watching:

http://billmoyers.com/episode/encore-confronting-the-contradictions-of-america’s-past/

http://billmoyers.com/segment/angela-glover-blackwell-on-the-american-dream/

Umang found another video of Michelle Alexander from earlier in Boston:

http://vimeo.com/41916187

And here is yet another video of her when she spoke at the UU General Assembly in Phoenix in June:

Now, if you are motivated to engage more seriously on this issue, here are some organizations that you can start to get involved and/or take action with:

Here also is a reminder of our upcoming events (there will not be another formal meeting until Friday, Sept. 28th):
