Note:  Due to budget cuts for 2012, beginning January 3 we will be closing at 7 pm Monday through  Thursday.   Friday and Saturday hours will remain unchanged

Laura Erickson Speaking for the Owls, Thursday, January 5, 7 pm

Laura Erickson will talk about the 12 species of owls found in Minnesota with emphasis on the ones most often seen in the north woods.  Archimedes, her education Eastern Screech_Owl, joins her so people can see an owl up close.  Laura can also answer a variety of bird related questions to add interest for winter feeding and bird watching.

Tech Petting Zoo Saturday, January 14 10:30-12:30

We had so much fun in December sharing and learning about gadgets that we decided to repeat the excitement.  On Saturday, January 14 from 10:30 -12:30 volunteers will be demonstrating different devices that can be used for downloading audio books and ebooks.  If you have been thinking about buying an ebook reader, a tablet, or audio player and want to know a little more, or if you just acquired one and want a demonstration of how to download books through the library, come to find out!

 

Holiday Hours

We will be closed Monday, January 16th in honor of the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  We will be open regular hours during the remainder of the week

 

Computer Basics 101  Wednesday January 18 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm

Discover how to use a computer with this free workshop. (Please tell friends and family about this workshop!)
Topics include basic computer terminology and use, including how to use your email account, how to spot a safe and secure internet site.

Cruising 101 – Everything you Ever Wanted to Know About Cruising but Were Afraid to Ask  Thursday, January 19, 7 pm 

Travel Master, Diane Skelly, talks about cruising, how to plan a cruise vacation, what to expect, when to go, costs, how to pack....and more...as in "everything you want to know about cruising

Tales of a Teacher’s First Year Tuesday, January 24,  7 pm

Author and former teacher John Salls shares excerpts from his novel, First Year. Set in small town Minnesota, the story touches on powerful, sometimes disturbing issues that show up in the classroom.  A first year teacher becomes caught in challenges from family violence, substance abuse and racism to the stress of escalating enrollment, overwhelmed staff, and a contentious school board. A catalyst for discussion about education.

Ellen Baker: Author:  I Gave My Heart  Monday, January 30 – 7 pm

Duluth author, Grand Rapids native, Ellen Baker talks about her latest novel, I Gave My Heart, a story of women working for the war effort in the 1940's. Though they find satisfaction in their work in a Wisconsin shipyard, it isn’t enough to distract them from the anxieties of wartime, or their fears for the men they love.

 

Family Movie Night   Thursday, January 26, 6:00 pm 

This month we will present  Dolphin Tale  on the big screen in the community room! Bring dinner or a snack and join us!

Story Times resume

Story Times will be Mondays January 9, 23, 30 at 9:30 and 10:30, and every Saturday at 10:30.

 

Winter Reading Programs

It's time for WINTER READING!! Sign up and pick up your book reading track, then Curl up with a good Book  through February.   Return the completed reading track, and pick out a free book!

Teens can “Jump into Reading” pick up a log, and record the number of pages read.  Return the completed log for a prize!
