What’s Happening at the Grand Rapids Area Library

April 18  2011

The Good News:

The Library will reopen with regular hours for full service on Monday April 25.
The Bad News:

We will be closed completely for cleaning and moving  Thursday-Saturday April 21-23.  (think “concrete dust”)

Hours Mon-Wed April 18-20 will remain 12:30-5:30

 

This week:

Wednesday, April 20th 12:00-1:30      at the Blandin Foundation

Horn of Africa (Great Decisions Discussion Series)

Since the early 1990s, the U.S. has monitored the Horn of Africa due to security concerns. Internal instability, weak governments in some countries, regional rivalries and a lack of development have resulted in an environment conducive to terrorism. Can the U.S. protect its national interests while mitigating the dangerous conditions in the region? http://www.fpa.org  

 

Thursday April 21   6 pm    in the Library Community Room

Family Movie Night   “Tangled”

Bring dinner or a snack and enjoy this popular movie on the big screen!

Next Week:

Saturday April 30th 1 pm  Spring Gardening Program: Flowering bulbs

William Dougherty will talk about flowering bulbs and their life cycle, use and culture.  He will also provide an overview of different types of spring and summer blooming bulbs. Dougherty is a professional landscape designer and garden writer and past President of the Iris Society of Minnesota.

Coming up in May:

May 5, Ann Markusen, Professor of Economics at the Humphrey Institute,

May 7,  Medieval Madness: The Society for Creative Anachronism invades the Library with displays, demonstrations, crafts and games for all.


Event Passes still available
We have passes for the following events:
“Big Sing 2011”  Saturday April 30, 2011,  7 pm.  IRA Civic Center, Grand Rapids
“Sultry Dances” Saturday April 30, 2011,  8 pm DECC auditorium, Duluth
“Beauty and the Beast” Thursday, May 12,  7 pm  at the Reif Center.
We still have tickets to other area attractions.

If you already have tickets, check the expiration date and plan to use them soon, as most expire at the end of April or in May.  
These passes have been funded with money from the sales tax which dedicated funding to preserve Minnesota’s arts and cultural heritage.

 

Story times will continue

Join the teachers from Early Childhood and Family Education (ECFE) in the meeting room for a time of books, songs and rhymes, followed by a simple craft and a snack. 

Saturdays at 10:30.     April 30,  May 7, 14, 21    (in the meeting room) 

Mondays at 9:30 and 10:30.    May  2, 9, 16, 23  (in the meeting room)
