What’s Happening at the Grand Rapids Area Library
July 1, 2011
Holiday Closure
The Library will be closed Saturday, July 2 through
Monday, July 4 for Independence Day. Don't forget that you can still drop books
off in the drive up book drop on the North side of the Library. You can renew
or request material online through our web site at www.grandrapids.lib.mn.us. You can also call the automated renewal line at

Go Fish!
We have fishing rods for loan thanks to the local DNR Fisheries Division,
local merchants and the Grand Rapids Evening Rotary Club. Fishing rods and
PFDs for children and adults can be used on the fishing pier or along the
river or borrowed for guests if you don’t have enough!
Thanks!
Equipment on loan
We have 8 full-size rod and reel combinations, and 6 child-size combinations, plus 10 PFDs in assorted sizes. We also have small boxes with hooks, sinkers, bobber and lures that go with each rod. The rods and life jackets can be signed out for 3 days. We will ask for contact information rather than a library card. Kids under 16 can fish without a license, and we will provide directions for adults to obtain a license.
These will be great for someone who wants to try fishing without investing in equipment, or for someone with guests but not quite enough gear to outfit everyone. Our first borrower was Bridges Kinship Mentoring, who borrowed the entire set for a group outing with Lets Go Fishing!
Indies on Tuesdays Begins
Our independent film series returns to the Myles Reif Performing Art Center on Tuesdays through August. Each Tuesday, an international award-winning independent film will be shown at 7:30 at the Reif. The films are from a variety of countries and are in many languages. The first film is “1981: The Year I Became a Liar,” a comedy from Canada (in French).
West African Dance
On Wednesday, July 6 at 9:30 am, we start the day with the highly energetic and entertaining Titambe West African Dance Ensemble. This group has given performances at several libraries on the Range this summer, and they are enthusiastically recommended. They teach some drumming and dancing in addition to performing.
Chess Club
Come and play chess! All levels and all ages are welcome, from beginner to master. Come to play and share the love of the game. Friday, July 8, 10 am – noon.
Books needed
We are accepting gently used books, CDs and DVDs and
puzzles for our annual used book sale to be held during Tall Timber Days in
August. Bring items to the circulation desk at the library. If you need a cart,
or help getting boxes from your car, let us know. All proceeds go towards
purchasing new materials and for programs at the library.
Summer Reading For Everyone!

Our adult summer

reading horizons! Read something you would not otherwise read. If you are in a
book group and would like a Library staff person to do a short talk on free
downloadable ebooks and audiobooks available from the library, let us know!

Hawk Construction is beginning work on a small building on the west end of the Library grounds.
