Wednesday, November 17, 10:00 am – 12:00 Peace Building and Conflict Resolution

Great Decisions Discussion

U.S. campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan have shown that military force alone cannot ensure peace in all conflicts. How can the U.S. successfully integrate the tools of peace building into its statecraft? At what point do poverty, disease and climate change threaten national security? What role can non-governmental actors play in supporting government led efforts? Great Decisions 2010     Briefing booklet is available for checkout and for use in the library.  Come and learn, then talk about it with your friends and neighbors.

Wednesday, November 17,  7:00  pm  Dr. Steven Ostovich, The Danger of Resistance

Dr. Ostovich, Professor and Chair of Theology and Religious Studies at the College of St. Scholastica, invites exploration of what "resistance" means. He uses as example how ordinary Germans responded to life in the Third Reich. Stories of resistance inspire us by showing that resistance is possible even in extreme conditions. Do they also serve as an excuse for inaction because we are not "heroes?" Dr. Ostovich is the author of “Missing God? Cultural Amnesia and Political Theology” and “The Courage of Faith: Some Philosophical Meditations”

Thursday November 18, 2:00 pm The Wiz returns!

Back by popular demand, Robert the Reading Wizard will again entertain and impress us with his magical mischief! Come join us and learn about the magic of Camelot, and Strega Nona, and other magical stories.

Mary will share fascinating stories, lessons learned, and beautiful photos captured during the 15 years she worked toward her goal. With her usual insight and good humor, she will delight the audience with more details than the book alone can speak to.
