Anniversary Celebration and book club kick-off (September 28 7 pm )
Grand Rapids Area Library celebrates its 10th anniversary this fall. The entire community is invited to a party...with special welcome to book clubs! KAXE commentator, Heidi Holtan will interview Laurie Hertzel, author and Minneapolis Star & Tribune book editor, giving insights for book club members or want-to-be members. Laurie's latest book entitled, Adventures of an Accidental Journalist, is a memoir written about her days gathering news for the Duluth Tribune. Exchange ideas for good reads; enjoy treats, register for door prizes!
This is also Banned Books Week!
Tuesday, October 5 12:00 noon Uncommon Facts About Common Birds
October is the month when many birds are on their way south for the winter. On Tuesday October 5 at 12:00 noon author and naturalist Stan Tekiela will give us some “Uncommon Facts About Common Birds” He has photographed and authored wildlife field guides on birds, butterflies and wildflowers for northern states. Stan will talk about Minnesota’s favorite birds and highlight interesting and little known tidbits about them. He will show photos, answer questions and sign copies of his books. (available for purchase) Bring your lunch and learn about birds!
Thursday October 7, 7 pm Minnesota Ghost Stories
Author Chad Lewis welcomes Halloween month with tales of haunted locations he has identified in Minnesota. Learn about places around the state where you might: sleep in a haunted bed & breakfast, hear ghostly wails in a theater, roller-skate with ghost, swim with mischievous spirits, drink in a haunted pub, see gravestones move on their own, and other odd and unusual places. Join the ghostly fun on Thursday, October 7 at 7 pm.

Saturday, October 16, 1:00 pm Vivid Colors & Designs: From Quilting to Picture Books,
Quilters, artists, children, Parents and others will enjoy hearing this talented artist speak about her colorful designs and illustrations. DeMarcken is the acclaimed illustrator of many picture books including: The Quiltmaker's Gift, The Quiltmaker's Journey and Miss Hunnicutt's Hat. Having lived on 4 of the world's 7 continents, DeMarcken shares stories of her world-wide adventures and tells how she became a book illunstrator, sharing her love of color with children and adults.

Great Decisions Discussion
U.S. campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan have shown that military force alone cannot ensure peace in all conflicts. How can the U.S. successfully integrate the tools of peace building into its statecraft? At what point do poverty, disease and climate change threaten national security? (Author Peter Smith)
Author Peter Smith offers a reading of his new book, A Porch Sofa Almanac, a collection of essays about being Minnesotan. Smith casts Minnesota in a unique light, writing "The entire state comes across as some wonderful, slightly quirky treasure unearthed at a church basement rummage sale." Much loved--perhaps a little rough around the edges--and absolutely ready to be shared! Smith is a Minnesota writer and weekly contributor to Minnesota Public Radio's Morning Edition with Cathy Wurzer.
October 28, 6:30 Family Movie Night!
Join us for another in our Family Movie Night series! This month we will present "How to Train Your Dragon" on the big screen in the community room. Bring dinner or a snack and join us for a great movie!
Story Times
Saturday story times are back EVERY Saturday at 10:30. Monday Book Times have started again at 9:30 and 10:30. Join the teachers from Early Childhood and Family Education (ECFE) for a time of books, songs and rhymes, followed by a simple craft and a snack.

Small (10-12 cup size) and large (30-40 cup size)
Old sheets to be turned into covers for the sale tables at the annual book sale.
Culture and museum passes available
We have passes available to a variety of events and attractions around the region. You must come into the library to check out the passes and exchange them for free tickets.
Search for them in the catalog using "Museum Pass" as a keyword in the title field.
