What’s Happening at the Grand Rapids Area Library

December Events

Holiday Book Sale Monday, December 6th 10:00-8:00

If you would rather buy than borrow a book, the Friends of the Library Holiday Book Sale is coming up.   On Monday, sale tables will be set up in the lobby of the Library as well as the Friends Book Store room, so stop by to pick up some good reading for yourself or someone else! If you are cleaning out your own bookshelves, and want to donate books, we’ll take them. 

Mom’s Day Out   Saturday, December 11

This event was so popular last year we had to repeat it this year! On Saturday from 10:00-1:00 the Girl Scouts are providing games and activities for children ages 3-10 in the community room.  Space is limited, so children must be pre-registered, and a bag lunch provided.  Call 327- 8823 to pre-register. 

The Opposite of Cold: The Northwoods Finnish Sauna Tradition Thursday, December 16th  7:00 pm

Author Michael Nordskog and Photographer Aaron Hautala will talk about their adventures photographing and gathering stories about family saunas in the North Woods. They produced a book about buildings and about culture and tradition.

What’s Next Jan Brett?  Tuesday December 28th 3:30-5:00

Creativity Tank artists will guide you in creating a book of your own, inspired by the world around you. 

Open to all ages. Children under 6 must be accompanied by an adult. You must be pre-registered for this class. Please call the Children's Department at (218) 327-8823 or register online at www.getlearning.org [Community Education Registration]

Family Movie night   Despicable me   Thursday, December 30 6 pm

Bring Dinner or a snack and join the fun!  All ages welcome.

 

Story Times in December

Join the teachers from Early Childhood and Family Education (ECFE) for a time of books, songs and rhymes, followed by a simple craft and a snack.

Saturdays at 10:30.  December 4, 11, 18

Mondays at 9:30 and 10:30.   December 6, 13, 

Special Holiday Story time on December 20th

The Library will be closed Friday and Saturday, December 24th and 25th and Saturday, January 1

Holiday Books

We have many Holiday books for children and adults, along with holiday music CDs.  Now is the time to check them out, because they will be gone in another week or two!

Civil War history enthusiast needed

On February 17 and 24 we will be showing parts of the Ken Burns series about the Civil War and holding short discussions.  We are looking for someone to facilitate or co-facilitate the discussions.  If you are interested in the Civil War era and are willing to help with a discussion, please call Bonnie Henriksen at 327-8828 or Marcia Anderson at 326-7643.
