Janurary Events

Family Movie night   Nanny McPhee Returns  Thursday, January 20, 6 pm

Bring Dinner or a snack and join the fun!  All ages welcome.

 

Monday, January 24: No School!

            Come to the library for the afternoon.

For Kids:  1:00-2:00 pm Let It Snow!

Join the Children's Library Staff as we explore all things snowy! We'll learn about snow crystals, make snow crafts, and eat snow snacks! Open to all area children ages 6 and up! Please pre-register by calling the Children's department at (218) 327-8823.

For Teens: 1:00 – 3:00   Game Time!

Teens-stop in to play a Wii and have some snacks!

 

Thursday, January 27 at 7:00 pm Energy Efficiency

 Dean Talbott from the Duluth Energy Efficiency Program will offer strategies for homeowners who want to reduce home energy use, lower utility costs and minimize carbon footprint.  Consider options for greatest impact and highest return on your investment in energy efficiency.  Explore no cost/low cost measures as well as large investments for heating and water heating upgrades.  Learn how to use energy wisely and create a plan for energy efficiency.  Participants will receive a free home energy score and comprehensive list of relevant energy rebates and credits.

If you are interested in learning more ways to increase your home energy efficiency and decrease your costs, we have many new books on energy conservation and green building or remodeling.

 

Monday, January 31,    6:30 pm    in the Blandin Foundation auditorium Great Decisions Kickoff 

                        U.S. Foreign Policy Outlook 2011

Tom Hanson, foreign policy consultant and former U.S. Foreign Service Officer, will kick off the 2011 Great Decisions Discussion Series sharing his perspectives on what is in the forefront for U.S. Foreign Policy in the coming year. Hanson serves as program secretary of the St. Paul-Minneapolis Committee on Foreign Relations, is an advisor to MIC's Great Decisions program, and Diplomat-in-Residence at the University of Minnesota –Duluth. Whether you participate in monthly Great Decisions discussions or not, this program will provide an overview of how the U.S. is positioned in international affairs.

Teen Winter Reading 2011 is here!

 It runs until-February 28. Teens (age 12-18) can read books or graphic novels and keep track of pages read each day. Log sheets can be picked up in the library or online at www.grandrapids.lib.mn.us/teens.htm   After reading 700 pages, bring in the log sheet and pick a free book. Once 1500 pages have been read, stop back in with the log sheet and pick up a Target gift card.  On Monday, January 24 from 1pm-3pm celebrate no school by playing a Wii game at the library.

Children’s Winter Reading Program

Pick up reading log

Come to the Children's desk and sign up for the Winter Reading Program! You'll receive a book log, a coupon for a free Applebee's kids’ meal, bookmark, and activity booklet. Then, just keep track of the time you read.When you have filled your sheet, return it to the Children's desk (by February 12th) and you can choose a new, free book to keep! Watch for special winter reading events coming up in January and February, including a special snow program on January 24.

 

Story Times in January

Join the teachers from Early Childhood and Family Education (ECFE) for a time of books, songs and rhymes, followed by a simple craft and a snack.

Saturdays at 10:30.  January 22,  29 

Mondays at 9:30 and 10:30.   January 24, 31
