Introducing Rapids Reads 2012: ‘Into the Wild’ by Jon Krakauer

Rapids Reads is a community read program to get people excited about reading by encouraging adults throughout the community to read one notable book and participate in a variety of related programs.

About the book

The 2012 selection, ‘Into the Wild’ by Jon Krakauer, is a true story exploring themes related to Americans’ fascination with wilderness and civil disobedience. ‘Into the Wild’ is also the beautifully written story of Christopher McCandless, a young man from a well-to-do family, who hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley.  He had given away his savings to charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, burned the cash in his wallet, and invented a new life for himself.  Four months later, his body was found by a party of moose hunters.  The book chronicles McCandless’ adventures and explores the motivations and actions behind his untimely death.
