Fall Garden Tips Thursday
September 9 at 7 pm
Our first program for adults this month is about
preparing your garden for fall. Gene Curnow, master gardener, will talk about
the best methods of preparation for winter. This is a timely topic if you want
to get the most out of your garden. We have a new book that will also be
useful: “The complete Idiot’s Guide to Year-Round Gardening”
by Delilah Smittle.
The Kayak Lady Thursday, September 16 7 pm
Mary Shideler has visited all 1007 lakes in Itasca County with her kayak and put together a book about her experience. On Thursday, September 16 at 7 pm she will show some of her amazing photos and talk about her experiences. She will bring books to purchase and sign also!
Boxing for Women Saturday, September 18 10:30 am
Heidi Henriksen shares how boxing has made a difference in how she shows up in life. A new athleticism is at the core of who she is and what she does every day. Boxing has influenced her self confidence, attitude, physicality, strength, energy, diet, time management and even relationships. Women's boxing is gaining popularity, even earning a place in Olympic competition. On Saturday morning September 18 at 10:30 she will talk about her experience in learning to box, demonstrate a few moves and invite audience members to move too. A program not limited to, but designed especially for women
Teen Book Discussion Friday September 17 3:30 pm
The book for this week is
“Ghost Canoe” by Will Hobbs. Pick up a copy at the Reference Desk,
read it, and join the discussion
Story Times
Saturday story times will be back EVERY Saturday beginning Saturday, September 18 at 10:30. Monday Book Times will resume on September 20 at 9:30 and 10:30. Join the teachers from Early Childhood and Family Education (ECFE) for a time of books, songs and rhymes, followed by a simple craft and a snack.
Anniversary Celebration and book club kick-off (September 28 7 pm )
Grand Rapids Area Library celebrates its 10th anniversary this fall. The entire community is invited to a party...with special welcome to book clubs! KAXE commentator, Heidi Holtan will interview Laurie Hertzel, author and Minneapolis Star & Tribune book editor, giving insights for book club members or want-to-be members. Laurie's latest book entitled, Adventures of an Accidental Journalist, is a memoir written about her days gathering news for the Duluth Tribune. Exchange ideas for good reads; enjoy treats, register for door prizes!

Grand Rapids Comprehensive Plan Survey Available
We have copies of the survey that was mailed to all property owners in the City. If you did not receive a survey, stop by to pick one up. We also have copies of the agendas and meeting summaries for the steering committee and the technical advisory committee working on revising the City’s comprehensive plan.
Library Card Sign up month
September is Library Card Sign-up month and we want
to make sure that all children and adults in the Grand Rapids area have the
smartest card of all – a library card. Observed since 1987, Library Card
Sign-up Month is a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and
libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most
important school supply of all.
Wish List: (Things we need)
Coffee makers for the community room
Small (10-12 cup size) and large (30-40 cup size)
Old sheets to be turned into covers for the sale tables at the annual book sale.
Culture and museum passes available
We have passes available to a variety of events and attractions around the region. You must come into the library to check out the passes and exchange them for free tickets.
Search for them in the catalog using "Museum Pass" as a keyword in the title field.
