March Events
U.S. National Security discussion:
This week is the 2nd in the 2011 Great Decisions Discussion Series. On Wednesday, March 16 at noon, the discussion topic this month is “U.S National Security”
(At the Blandin Foundation in the Board Room)
U.S. national security priorities were expanded after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, to include waging war in Iraq and Afghanistan, tightening border security, pursuing cyber threats, halting nuclear proliferation and attempting to snuff out homegrown terrorism. How has the U.S. national security agenda evolved since 9/11? In what ways will this agenda shape the American way of life in the future? Briefing books for the discussion series are available for checkout or reading in the library.

Read a Copy
Many book clubs in town have already discussed the book or are planning to do so soon. Multiple copies are available at the Library for check-out. Pick up a copy to discuss with your book club or to read just for yourself.
New Carpet!
Finally! After talking about getting new carpet in the Library for 2 years, it will happen this spring. On Friday of this week, we will begin moving computers into the meeting room for public use, and we will move some books and DVDs for children and adults into the Friends of the Library bookstore space. These will be available for check out.
Beginning March 21st, movers will begin moving stacks, and then the carpet layers will begin ripping up the old carpet, preparing the floor, and laying new carpet. It will be done in sections, and the estimate is that it will take 4-6 weeks to do the entire Library. We will remain open for limited hours with limited services throughout the project.
Hours beginning March 21st will be M-F 12:30-5:30 and Saturdays 10-2.
Request Books in Advance
Items can be requested online by using the Catalog tab on our website at www.grandrapids.lib.mn.us Search for the item you want using either the title or the author. When you find the item, click on the “request any copy” button. You will be asked for your library card number. The next available copy will be pulled for your use. If we have a copy on the shelf, it will take at least 24 hours to find a safe window of opportunity to sneak into the library to collect it. If we don’t have a copy, a copy from another library will be sent for you to pick up, and you will be notified when it arrives.
We will not be accepting book donations for the Friends of the Library Store until May 2, when we will be able to use the Book Store Space as a store again!
