What’s Happening at the Grand Rapids Area Library

July 26, 2010

This Week

Cool Jazz and treats!  Noon-1:00  July 28

Sam Miltich and Friends will be performing as part of the summer reading program.  They will do their usual fantastic performance, plus give some background on the history of  jazz.  This great celebration will be held Wednesday July 28 at noon in the Rotary tent behind KAXE. Celebrate summer with some cool jazz and a frozen treat! Bring a lunch and something to sit on to enjoy the concert. (Fun for ALL AGES)

If you want more info on Jazz, we have books on Jazz, biographies of Jazz musicians for kids and adults, and CDs of Jazz music.  This includes biographies of Django Reinhart for both kids and adults, and CDs of his music.

Indies on Tuesday

This week's independent film is The Country Teacher from the Czech Republic.  An International award winning film will be shown every Tuesday this summer at the Reif Performing Arts Center. The film series is cosponsored by the Library and the Reif Center, and underwritten by the Boundary Waters Blues Fest.  Check the Reif’s web site at www.reifcenter.org for a description of the films.

(Don’t forget: the Blues Festival is this weekend at the Itasca County Fairgrounds!)

The annual HUGE used book sale is coming up August 6-8 at Central Square Mall.    We are collecting books, CDs DVDs  and  puzzles for the sale until August 2.   These can be dropped off at the Library or at the Village Bookstore during open hours. If you have a couple of hours to volunteer for a shift before, during or after the sale, contact  Susan Hayes at 999-5806

Buy Books Too

The sale starts at 9:00am on Friday, August 6, and continues through the weekend during the Mall’s open hours. All proceeds go to support Library programs and collections.  Thanks to the Village Bookstore and to Central Square Mall for their support!

North Woods History  Thursday, August 5 at 6:30 pm

Hilarious songs and backwoods tales bring to life the way of lumberjacks in the North Woods. Storyteller, song-writer and musician Bill Jamerson tells the story of these colorful characters, the struggles they faced, the simple pleasures they enjoyed and the disappointments they endured. Bring your own chair or blanket to join the fun in the Rotary tent at KAXE next to the library. In case of inclement weather the program will be held in the library's community room.

Race Car    August 5 2:30

Minnesota author Will Weaver makes a pit stop at the library from 2:30-3:30 on Thursday  for a short presentation and to show the No. 16 Bookmobile car which will be racing at the Grand Rapids Speedway at night.  Driver Nichole Davis will also be on hand. All ages welcome - especially teens!  Weaver is the author of a series of novels about race cars, including Checkered Flag Cheater, and Super Stock Rookie.  Learn more at www.motornovels.com

Each week we will read a picture book or two and try our hand at a craft that children may have enjoyed during that time. This event is for the whole family, so don't forget to invite Grandma and Grandpa! Week #1: Growing Up in the 1930's
