Dr. Anton Treuer, professor of Ojibwe studies at Bemidji State University, returns to the library to discuss his latest book. The Assassination of Hole in the Day: Ojibwe Leadership, land and life transformed explores the leadership and demise of Hole in the Day, (Bagone-giizhig) an Ojibwe chief during the period when white settlement encroached on territory long occupied by native Ojibwe people.
An expert in Ojibwe language, Dr. Treuer has devoted his career to preserving the Ojibwe language and stories from the oral tradition, translating hundreds of pieces into English and publishing them in the original language as well.
Tuesday, November 9, 7 pm Nutrino Research and your Local Underground Physics lab
One of the only operational U.S. underground high energy particle physics and astrophysics facilities is located in northern Minnesota at Soudan Mine State Park. Located 2,341 feet underground, this laboratory hosts scientists conducting experiments to learn more about sub-atomic particles called neutrinos and Dark Matter. Neutrinos are helping scientists understand the origins of the universe. Spinoffs from their experiments have led to such developments as PET scans in the field of medicine and insulated wire now being used in the manufacture of airplanes.
Allen Lipke, Outreach Education Coordinator for the Soudan Underground Physics Lab, will provide an overview of the research being done at Soudan, touch upon the Dark Matter research and talk briefly about a new experiment to study neutrinos on the Ash River Trail. Lipke, a retired science teacher from Hibbing, is a member of the U of M faculty.

How can the U.S. successfully integrate the tools of peace building into its statecraft? At what point do poverty, disease and climate change threaten national security? What role can non-governmental actors play in supporting government led efforts? Great Decisions 2010 Briefing booklet is available for checkout and for use in the library. Come and learn, then talk about it with your friends and neighbors.
Wednesday, November 17, 7:00 pm Dr. Steven Ostovich, The Danger of Resistance
Dr. Ostovich, Professor and Chair of Theology and Religious Studies at the College of St. Scholastica, invites exploration of what "resistance" means. He uses as example how ordinary Germans responded to life in the Third Reich. Stories of resistance inspire us by showing that resistance is possible even in extreme conditions. Do they also serve as an excuse for inaction because we are not "heroes?" Dr. Ostovich is the author of “Missing God? Cultural Amnesia and Political Theology” and “The Courage of Faith: Some Philosophical Meditations”
