We purchased this product to couple with our open-top Cascata rain barrel. Because the RainReserve kit comes with a drill bit, we were able to drill an appropriately sized hole for the tubing from the diverter into the rain barrel. We also applied silicone around the hole to make it water-tight. This was key, as the water only diverts back into the bottom part of the downspout once the rain barrel fills up to a level even with the middle, inside lip of the diverter box. The instructions with the kit, and on RainReserve's website, are quite explicit that this is how the system functions with an open-top rain barrel. The middle inside lip of the diverter box should be level with the maximum full water level you want in your barrel. If you open up your diverter box, this "inside lip" is the plastic ..."wall" ... separating the flow of water into the tubing from the overflow water that goes down the bottom part of the downspout. We had to finagle the height of our rain barrel a bit during a couple of rainstorms to get the height exactly where we wanted it. In retrospect, I would have drilled the hole in our barrel for the diverter tubing a bit lower down the barrel, to give us more room between the top of the hole and the top of the barrel - this would have given us more wiggle room in the height of the barrel relative to the height of the diverter box. We had a couple of trial-and-errors where the barrel overflowed from the top of the barrel before we raised it just enough to keep the top of the barrel over the height of that "middle lip" in the diverter box, but low enough that the water would flow into the barrel through the diverter hose. I hope this information helps out folks looking to install this for open-top barrels.

In heavy rainstorms there is some water that goes all the way down the downspout anyway, but we still get plenty of water into the rain barrel, and it generally fills up quickly. We like that you don't have to monitor this diverter - for the simpler flip-diverters to work this well, you'd have to be home/awake when it rains, and willing to go out in the rain to switch the diverter from the barrel to the downspout or vice-versa. This one takes care of itself!
