We needed a rope light to install in tray moulding around perimeter of our rather dark apartment living room for a general, soft recessed-lighting feel. After time-consuming research I settled on this product. I wanted a color temperature of 3500-4000 Kelvin, but most rope lights offer only 3000K or 5000K (and up). I went with the 3000K because I was pretty sure the higher temperatures would look like fluorescent lighting. As it turns out, by lining the tray moulding with aluminum-foil tape, I got a brighter, almost silvery quality to the light which gave me the higher color-temperature effect while still keeping some of the warm quality.

I also worried that the 3528 LEDs (vs 5050s) in this tape/rope light hybrid would be too dim, but the close spaceing of the LEDs makes it plenty bright. One thing that's important to remember: this is essentially directional LED tape enclosed in polyvinyl casing, so it's necessary to decide what direction is optimal and tack it down every 8 to 12 inches with the LEDs facing in that direction. In our case, the aluminum-foil lining of the tray moulding bounces the light around the makes it behave as though it came from a conventional omnidirectional rope light.
