Harman Kardon Onyx Wireless Speaker System with Rechargeable Battery: Opinions
I hoped the Onyx to be a worthy successor of the great and popular go&play speaker, which meanwhile is available as a wirelss version.The Onyx is smaller but has built in battery and supports all available wireless modes you can think of, including Airplay, DLNA and Bluetooth (with Apt-X support and NFC).
But soundwise the Onyx is no match. It sounds good, but you have to crank it to at least 50% in order to really get some punchy sound and 50% is already pretty loud, much too loud for comfortable listening at home. It sounds rather flat and lifeless at lower volumes. I also own the small Bose Soundlink Mini and at low volumes the Bose outplayed the Onyx, which sounded rather honky, without any mentionable bass.
The speaker also starts to take away bass at levels higher than 70%. With particular recordings I was able to hear some distortion, but not too severe. It sounds just best at medium levels and doesn't like neither low nor high volume!
Overall I had no issues with the speaker, it worked flawlessly in Airplay mode, as it did in Bluetooth mode. I only found the loud confirmation-tones a bit annoying when the speaker connected to your router or to your bluetooth device.
The battery life was as advertised. At levels below 50% I got about 5 and a half hours of wireless streaming. I also tried it at 50% where it sounded best and I only got 4 hours until it shut off on its own.
I don't quite understand the choice of the leather for the back as you usually wouldn't see it, also the aluminium passive radiator at the back looks nice, but normally it won't be seen at the back. Unfortunately the front cloth-cover doesn't quite match the rest of the speaker as it has a cheap feel to it, I would have rather preferred a metal grille.
Overall the Onyx is definitely a nice speaker, but at the same time heavily overpriced and does not really give the performance of a comparable boombox.
The iOS app crashed every time I was connected with Wifi, it only worked with bluetooth connection.
I expected a bit more to tell the truth. I also own a JBL Radial and while smaller, the Radial is able to produce a much more convincing sound, at least up to normal levels.
