The new Jongo S3 and the new Bose Mini have many things in common but that does not mean they sound, look or operate at all the same. Both serve the portable device market, i.e. smartphone and tablets to permit listening by more than one person. Both are small and portable, both use rechargeable batteries, both connect via Bluetooth and both have surprising sound for their size. Battery life is similar. And at $200 compete in the same price range. I've tested both.

The first noticeable difference is the construction and form factor. While the Bose utilizes an aluminum finish and has a traditional speaker shape, the Jongo S3 is primarily a hard composite material with a soft cloth grill and is a cube. The shape of the Bose dictates that the sound will be pumped out in one direction, the direction the speaker is facing. This works for some applications, mostly if all of the listeners are in front of the speaker. The Jongo goes for a non-traditional approach, allowing the user to set whether the sound is pumped forward or 360 degrees. The latter is obviously much better for outdoor use or rooms in which the speaker is placed in the center of the group. The Jongo further customizes their settings to permit sound to be dispersed in a wide stereo field, a pinpointed direction (forward) which could be useful in a meeting room for example or optimized for outdoor use.

The Bose is indeed tiny, it's possible to fit it in to a large jacket pocket but despite heavy sound processing it simply is not capable of room-filling sound. It works adequately for jazz vocals and You Tube videos but doesn't have the oomph for neither classical nor urban music. Even with the volume at max it can't cut it outdoors, like at a backyard barbecue.

The controls for the Bose are on top of the speaker and are not clearly marked, making it a little more difficult to make adjustments. The Jongo opts for placing the most used controls on the front panel and the lesser used control on the back panel. Since it is a cube that fires sound in all directions, in fact there really isn't a distinct front or back.

Using WiFi eliminates having to pair the unit each time, once it is registered to your network you just turn it on and select your source material. It can also be daisy-chained with added speakers "learning" their setup from the first speaker. That means you can have wireless WiFi sound throughout the house and backyard, especially desirable for parties. There are no huge drawbacks to either speaker.

The primary thing a speaker does is play sound, how do they compare? The Jongo definitely pumps out more volume, as noted above the Bose works best as a personal listening device. The Bose tends to have that famous manufactured sound that knocks your socks off on first listening, and then doesn't sound as musically accurate as other speakers once the newness wears off. The Jongo is much less directional and after a few minutes you get the impression that the sound is just "there" like a good surround-sound system. At the $200 price range the Bose loses points for not having a replaceable battery, while the Jongo does. And the Jongo is simply more versatile without sacrificing sound quality. One notable thing about the Jongo stands out, not as a severe negative but more as a "wish they had" and that's the fact that there is no easy way to lift it and carry it around without grabbing one of the aforementioned soft cloth grill cloths that surround each of the four sides. Doing so is not a very secure way of carrying the speaker. It would have been nice to have a fold-down handle instead.

Bottom line: either one will do the job, there is no clear-cut winner.
