My experience with the ATW-1102 system is limited so, consider this review a first impression.

Judging from the lack of reviews, there's not many of these out there just yet. But, this technology seems to be the direction of wireless sound systems. The only down-side I've seen so far is excessive battery consumption. Sound reproduction is excellent. So, four stars for incredible sound reproduction. Minus one star for battery consumption. Read on.

I bought two of these from a local source to replace a couple UHF wireless mics which operated in a frequency range that was re-dedicated to public service entities by FCC in about 2010, i.e. 698 to 806 MHz wireless microphones are now illegal to use in US & Canada. (Mexico might also have adopted the same protocol). The ATW-1102's are UHF mics (300MHz to 3 GHz) and operate at 2.4 GHz. (That's over-simplifying everything).

Wireless mics require batteries. And, most wireless mics do not have a battery meter to tell you when your power source is about to die.. So, you'll find yourself replacing good batteries 'just to be safe' and to make sure the thing doesn't die mid-sentence or mid-song. The 1102's are no different in this regard. There is no battery meter on these; they have a blinking green light that indicates low battery....and you have to be looking directly at the microphone to see the green light flashing on and off. There's no indicator on the receiver.

I've found that mics which require 9v batteries operate longer and are more reliable. (arguable). Those which require AA's and AAA's usually require more frequent battery replacement. The ATW-1102 owners manual suggests that two AA batteries should be good for 7 hours "depending on usage pattern". My experience is that you 'might' get 3 hours with the 1102 mic continuously on and actually used for 45 minutes of that time speaking normally into the mic at 50-62 db.

They're simple to set up, easy to adjust and are engineered in such a way as to virtually eliminate feedback by manipulating on board gain adjustment. I could stand maybe four feet in front of a speaker with a hot mic and not be afraid of feedback.

Were it not for the battery consumption issue, which I don't think is all THAT inconsistent with other wireless mics which require AA or AAA batteries, these things would be perfect. Battery consumption is what it is: there's better and much worse out there. But, for the current price of these units, battery consumption might be a deal breaker. Had I known beforehand that they'd suck this much juice, I might've considered other manufacturers. But AudioTechnica quality is hard to beat. The reason I bought these is because I also had some ATW-700's. Excellent quality stuff!

At this writing there is a rebate of $25 if you buy two of the System 10 ATW-1102's. It seems also that they can be purchased cheaper locally than on Amazon. That certainly will change as the price will certainly have to come down.
