I've owned these speakers for about a year now, and I absolutely love them. Previously, I used a pair of Paradigm Mini Monitor bookshelf speakers with a Polk 12" sub. These speakers blow that combination out of the water in so many ways. Things I love:

- No external sub. All the bass I could ever want, and no fat subwoofer eating floor space.
- Great sound stage. Listening to a jazz album now, and it might as well be live.
- Striking clarity. Of all the attributes, the "resolution" of these speakers sets them apart from the Paradigms I owned. It could be just that they're tuned differently, but I love how my music sounds on these. I'm always revisiting songs I haven't listened to in a long time to see how they sound on these speakers. Every time, I'm impressed.
- Great looks. Just two simple black towers on each side of my TV. When friends come over, they don't think much of them... until I turn them on. The sound they're capable of producing can be disarming, especially to people used to HTIB's.

I've always figured there was a sweet spot in speakers. After a certain price point, you stop paying for tangible features (more woofers, more watts, better build quality) and pay for intangibles ("warmth", "intimacy", etc.). I feel that the 8040's get you true, unforgiving, full-range speaker at the lowest price point without any sacrifices.

While some people reading this review may question paying $1600 for a pair of speakers, I would encourage them to save up for this pair, especially at the cost of center and rear channels. I run these speakers in a stereo setup for movies, and never miss the sound of laser beams shooting behind me. The massive wall of sound these speakers produce with the insane bass is worth so much more than surround sound. Plus, those channels can always be added later if they're really missed.

Regarding the other speakers from Definitive Tech, I felt the model below this (8020) was too stripped-down (no passive woofers, no rear-facing tweeters), so I passed on those. The models above have bigger subwoofers, but I have a moderately-sized room and have never felt the need for more low-end. I imagine the midranges might sound better since the woofers are a bit larger, but I'm not sure if that makes them worth while. Pair your speakers well to your room; if you have a large room, consider the bigger ones. There's no point in putting huge speakers in a small room.

TL;DR: Spend the $1600 and get amazing sound for 20 years of your life. That's only $0.22 per day!
