I bought a KEF HTB-2 sub when I needed something small. You can either use it vertically, as the photos usually show, or you can take off the vertical base, screw in 3 little legs, and use it horizontally. Either way, it does not require much real estate: I have mine horizontally on a shelf in my AV rack. Perhaps not the best set-up, but it was the only space I had available!

Note that this sub is intended for home theater systems, and hence has minimal controls of its own. There is a single RCA input, a selectable 0/6/12dB boost that seems to work around 40Hz, and a 0/180 degree phase switch. That's it. Crossover frequency and output level must be handled by the amp/receiver it is connected to. On that subject, I have read some complaints that this sub does not have enough output, but I checked the levels using white noise and a spectrum analyzer, and found that I had to turn it way *down* to get a smooth response with my main speakers, so I don't know why other people had trouble.

The one complaint I have about this sub is that the "auto" power threshold is too high. Music/movies with long quiet sections can thus see the sub switch off part way through, and it takes a while of stronger signal for it to switch on again, which is annoying. You can, however, set to "on" (vs "auto") and manually switch the power as required.

The other issue I noted while using the sub is that while it is in "off" mode, the output from my receiver to the main speakers is skewed, with more coming from the right than the left. This goes away once the sub is on, so I assume it is some interaction of the sub's off state with the receiver that is causing this, but which is at fault I do not know.

My final comment is on price. The list price of this item is absurd. If you are patient you should be able to pick it up for half or even a third of that that price.
