Umarex USA Browning Leverage Combo Hardwood .22 Pellet: Opinions
First, there are endless air rifles out there - some good, some not so good and all of them want your $$$.
The Browning Leverage Air Rifle is a great buy for around $200. You get precision pin point accuracy and a solid heavy rifle.
This rifle is not for kids, it is heavy and for an older teenager / adult use. It can lay the smack down on game like a 22LR / Short can and is a lot of fun to shoot. This model is the full power model and Canada has a version that has limits to 500fps. This is not that model and my rifle chrono's in at 800fps with lead .22 pellets. For the .177 model, that should equal to 1000fps for that version.
Pros: Buy the .22 version for general hunting use. 8lbs of force is required to kill small game / rabbit / squirrel to dispatch effectively and at it's muzzle with Crosman 14.3gr pellets it generates 20ft lbs of muzzle energy at 800fps off my chronograph constant.
It is big and solid- not some wimpy piece of junky plastic and it has a solid barrel that performs for the field use aspect. It is heavy duty and you will think you are carrying around a full 308 Win hunting rifle. That is ok because it is solid as a rock and adds in stability and accuracy. It also trains the younger crowd on this aspect as well that a full solid hunting rifle is about 8-10lbs and to get used to that weight in hunting.
Cons:
This rifle is not for youth / small kids as it is a large heavy rifle. It has no rifle sling points. If you have a small youth, buy him a Crosman 664gt rifle with 177 pellets - it will kill pigeons, starlings , sparrows to no end and weigh 3lbs with a 2-7 power rimfire scope attached. It is good out to 35yds to slay these winged vermin and train him on the basics of stalking and shooting positions, etc.
When they earn the .22 power and rifle weight, buy him the Browning Leverage / Xisico XS46U. He can then hunt crows, rabbits, squirrels, and other small game with this larger air rifle with one shot kills training him on hunting with a full sized hunting rifle of the same weight for larger game. The Browning Leverage is on par with a 9lb Rem 700 308 Win with a medium optic. If you want a more lightweight answer, $$$ answer- Benjamin Marauder PCP air rifle / pistol in .22 will do it all, but it comes at a $500 price tag. It is lighter in weight and for the pistol as an ultralight carbine a nice feature. A $150 pump is also a requirement for this route.
Things you will have to do to make the Browning Leverage shoot better- dump the cheap scope rings it comes with and get weaver UTG aluminum rings so you can torque them down on the mount for the spring recoil factor. You possibly will have to shim the rear scope ring with some electrical tape / aluminum can - there are videos on youtube on how to do this in 5 minutes or less. They work excellent- this is because most all air rifles have barrel drop factors and this aligns the scope with the drop in 8 to 10 inches at 25yds and all you are trying to achieve is 1/2 point of impact higher than your aim point at 25yds for a zeroed rifle. The factory scope comes shimmed with some cheap tape...with my factory optic maxed out it allowed 1 1/2 inch high point of impact strike at 25yds... it worked, but barely to dial it back down to 1/2 inch high point of impacts at 25yds. The better more effective approach is to shim it yourself with electrical tape and some strips off an aluminum can- solid and no movement- costs nothing. Dump the cheap included scope rings. They are garbage.
Take off the back rear sight with fiber optic... it just gets in the way of loading a pellet and you want an optic for this rifle accuracy- it is pinpoint accuracy of 1/2 inch or less at 25yds.
You can stick with the factory 3-9x40mm scope and do all your hunting for this rifle zeroed at 35yds - out to 40yds - point of aim point of impact. If you want a better scope- UTG sells a 3-9x32mm Adjustable Objective one for $80 with mil dot hold over points. It is a little smaller in size but better in glass clarity / adjusts easier for taking the rifle out to it's max effective kill range of 60yds where the pellet is still going 500fps and 8lbs of energy with mil dot hold over points.
My trigger breaks at between 3lbs and 3.5lbs on my pull scale- good but it has a lot of creep - horrible in that aspect of creep.
Excessive creep hurts accuracy on pulling shots and you will pull some shots- as the pellet is only traveling 800fps. In pulling a shot, put your thumb strait back on top of the rifle comb of the stock to prevent this jerk / pull loss of accuracy with a long trigger creep- to counter it. It now recoils strait back with no wrist pulling of a shot before the pellet has exited the barrel since it is traveling so slow.
Bottom Line:
Mine grouped tighter with Gamo Match .22 Cal, 15.43 Grains (red, white, black package) than with the Crosman 14.3gr Hollow point Premiers. The Premiers gave about 0.75 groups at 25yds and the Gamo gave 1/2 groups or less. Both are fine for hunting use on "tree rats" and rabbits out to my 40yd limit.
Muzzle= 20ft lbs of energy at 800fps with Crosman 14.3gr or Gamo 14.5gr pellets
At 25yds it shoots 1/2 inch high with 13lbs of energy at 650fps
At 35yds it is zeroed POA / POI and has 11ft lbs of energy at 600fps
At 40yds it is roughly 1/2 inch low 10ft lbs and moving at 574fps
40yds is my effective limit to ethically kill small game with pinpoint accuracy for me and keep the flat trajectory in the 1 inch kill zone for hunting use. Past 40yds, it drops fast on it's trajectory flight.
Accuracy... mine likes the Gamo .22 Match ammo and groups 1/2 with it one on top of the other at the range at 25yds. I will repost with pics to show it's accuracy ability.
With all the 22LR insanity going on where ammo is through the roof- and shortages, a .22 caliber air rifle with a velocity of 800fps is a great way to do a lot of trigger pulling time and cost very little to do so compared to the gun industry prices going through the roof $$$ on costs just to enjoy hunting small game / plinking to keep your rifle skills up without burning $$$ in bullets. This rifle has about 100db rating and is quiet enough for back yard use and can put meat on the table or in the freezer. It is cost effective to do so with pin point accuracy.
I would buy it again and recommend it to others for small game hunting use. It has the power you need to smack the small game down without noise issues. It is like shooting a 22 short / CBEE. I will repost at later date with target accuracy pics from the range.
