Following are updated 2022 hours of operation and answers to frequently asked questions regarding Chautauqua Institution's recreation areas.


Chautauqua Golf Club

 

  • Pro Shop Hours of Operation are currently 7a.m.-7p.m. daily, weather permitting
  • Golf Learning Center is available for use daily sunrise to sunset.  While the facility is not staffed that entire time, there exists a ball machine that accepts credit cards.
  • Private lessons, junior camps, and adult clinics will be offered this summer.  For more info and to register, call (716) 357-6480.

Chautauqua Health & Fitness

 

  • Fitness Center Hours of Operation:

                (Now through August 28) Monday-Friday: 6:30 a.m.-8 p.m., Saturday & Sunday 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

  • Reservations are required to use the Turner Pool. Call 716-357-6430 for more information and to schedule a swim time.
  • Personal training, Pilates apparatus training, private yoga and swim instruction, and group exercise classes are also available.  Call 716-357-6430 for more information.

What was previously the Heinz Fitness Center space is being reutilized this year for young adult (ages 16-20) programming during the summer assembly season.  Questions regarding young adult programming should be directed to Alyssa Porter, Director of Youth & Family Programs, apo...@chq.org.

 

Chautauqua Tennis Center

 

  • Pro Shop Hours of Operation:

(June 6-June 24) Monday-Friday: 9 a.m.-1 p.m., weather permitting

(June 25–August 28) Monday–Friday: 7 a.m.-7 p.m., Saturday & Sunday: 7 a.m.-5 p.m., weather permitting

(August 29-September 30) Monday-Friday: 9 a.m.-Noon, weather permitting

  • The opening of the tennis center was delayed this year due to damage sustained over the winter months to the HydroGrid system that irrigates the 8 clay courts. 
  • Instructors will be on site during the summer assembly season to provide private lessons and group clinics.

John R. Turney Sailing Center

  • Hours of Operation:

(June 27-August 28) Monday-Friday: 9am-5pm (last boat out at 4); Saturday & Sunday: 12pm-4am, weather permitting

  • The Sailing Center provides a wide selection of sailboats for rental, private sailing lessons, group sailing lessons (sold through Special Studies), and guided sailing experiences.

Chautauqua Sports Club

  • Hours of Operation

(June 25–August 28) Monday–Saturday: 11–6 p.m.; Sunday: 1-5 p.m.

  • The Sports Club rents Pontoon boats, kayaks, stand up paddleboards, canoes, paddle boats, fishing poles; offers shuffleboard, English lawn bowling, Mahjong, duplicate bridge, outdoor ping pong; hosts the annual Old First Night Run (July 30), Beach-to-Beach Color Sprint (Aug 11), adult Softball leagues, Jamestown Tarp Skunks vs CHQ Team Exhibition Game (July 14); offer guided kayak tours and more!

Public Beaches

  • Children’s Beach & Pier (formerly known as College Club) Beach Hours of Operation:

(June 25–August 27) Daily Noon-6pm (weather, staffing, and water conditions permitting)

  • Docks will be installed at University and Heinz waterfronts for those wanting to enjoy the view and fish.  Signage will be posted that states, “No Swimming, No Lifeguard on Duty.”

Where can folks play basketball on the grounds this summer?

 

·         Coyle Courts – located next to Sharpe Field (corner of Hawthorne & South Lake Roads.) These outdoor courts are open pre and post season. During season, courts are available Monday to Friday, 12-2 pm and after 4 pm; Saturday and Sunday, all day. Balls are typically not provided but may be checked out from the Boys' and Girls' Club equipment room on Saturdays during the season from 12-4 on Saturdays.  The Sports Club also has a limited number of balls for loan.

·         Seaver Gym – located on South Lake Road near the intersection with Hawthorne. The indoor court at Seaver Gym will be open Monday-Thursday, 7 pm-10 pm for free play during the summer assembly season. Supervision will be limited with Club and Play CHQ staff in the immediate area. Balls will be provided. Hours may change throughout the season.

Where can folks play pickleball on the grounds this summer?

 

·         Coyle Courts – located at the corner of South Lake and Bryant. During the summer assembly season, courts will be available Monday to Friday, 12-2 pm and after 4 pm; Saturday and Sunday, all day.  Those interested in playing this summer should sign up using the pickleball link provided at tennis.chq.org
