What is The Chautauqua News?  I first read about it as the sponsor of last Saturday’s puppy race festivities.

I don’t have an answer for you but I am curious too. Did you get a response?

The Chautauqua News is a SATIRE newspaper - online only - to which you may subscribe. It's been going for more than a decade. For some of us, it's the only way to have a sense of what's really going on in CHQ.

The simple answer is that Chautauqua News is a satirical electronic journal put out by longtime Chautauquans. Subscriptions are free.

  Carol and Mike,

I went to the source and here is what I learned:

Chautauqua News

Dr. Pangloss

Apparently some of your Grapevine readers have had questions about who or what The Chautauqua News is. In brief, The News is a parody, satire, and humor newsletter written by a group of Chautauquans that has been publishing on the grounds for over twelve years. The News is sent out weekly to over 1500 Chautauquans. We invite your readers to try us out. Grapevine readers can subscribe to the Chautauqua News by emailing:   Chautau...@gmail.com

Many of us find this on-line newsletter insulting to LGBTQ+ and overall very cynical to everything Chautauqua. The fact that the writers don't use their real names makes it hard to have a conversation with them about this.

Ms Britton

You have expressed some issues with the authorship and tone of the Chautauqua News. Please allow me to respond. As to authorship, I proudly claim being a co-founder and frequent contributor to the CHQ News. My name is William Armstrong Branch. We live at 50 Peck Ave in the summer and Charlotte NC in the winter. My friends and foes alike, call me by my nickname, Twig.

I write in the voice of several different authors (Leftcadio Hern, J. Milton Pangloss, Eilene Wright, Happy Balfour, the CHQ Gadfly, and other names). I find using a variety of names helps me keep the characters authentic, there is no sinister reason why I do this.

As to my opinion of sexual orientation, I beleive myself to be neither homophobic nor homophilic. In my experience, knowing an individual's sexual prefernces tells me very little about who they are. I prefer an extended conversation with an individual to be much more helpful.

Along those lines, I am happy sit down with you over a cup of coffee or tea to hear your concerns about the Chautauqua News. In fact I am available this afternoon. While I have no plan to apologize for my articles, I would be happy to answer any of your questions and expand on why we do what we do. I plan to listen to you carefully and perhaps you will change my mind about a topic or issue. This has happened many times before.

If you would prefer to text me or speak on the phone, my number is 704-608-3992

I am happy to buy the coffee and look forward to talking with you and any of your friends, who may wish to join us.

Twig
