Dear Chautauquans:

As the 2018 season approaches, please review the below policies and guidelines regarding modes of individual transportation on the grounds. As stated in Chautauqua Institution's Rules and Regulations (linked on the Board of Trustees page under Governance Documents), walking and/or riding bicycles are considered the normal modes of travel within the Chautauqua grounds during the season. In particular, please note that vehicles, bicycles and golf carts are not permitted on any pedestrian walks, and that devices such as Class 2 or 3 E-bikes (electric assist), mopeds, battery or gas powered single-, dual- or three-wheeled scooters, motorcycles, skateboards or motorized skateboards should not be used on the grounds at all.

We appreciate your cooperation in maintaining a safe environment for all as we move around the grounds this summer.

Regards,

Jordan Steves

Dear Chautauquans:

Earlier this week, we sent an email titled “Reminder on Institution policies regarding personal transportation” that aimed to refresh our collective memories about community safety standards and regulations. In response, several Chautauquans questioned the information about the use of Class 2 or 3 E-bikes (electric assist). Upon closer review of the Rules and Regulations, we have determined that we can permit the use of electric-assist bikes that also have pedals, in accordance with Federal regulations in the absence of clear regulations from New York State.

Electric-assist bicycles with pedals are permitted at Chautauqua and required to follow the same community rules and regulations as bicycles without electric assistance.

With thanks for your help in addressing this concern,

Jordan Steves
Director of Strategic Communications and Community Relations
