With sympathy, we share that Jim Groninger died in December of last year.

The Groninger family asked that we share the following memorial statement:

In Loving Memory of Jim Groninger

March 25, 1944 – December 7, 2024

Jim Groninger lived a full life of love and boundless energy.

Hailing from Aurora, IL, Jim would tell you that he was born at a young age, and was kissed by a girl in the 1st grade. He had the loudest laugh in the room, making us laugh so hard that we cried, and exuded a silliness that belied his sharp mind and business acumen.

A corporate finance guru by trade, Jim could do math in his head faster than most could find a calculator. He would walk the dogs wearing his Santa outfit on Christmas morning, and spend hours working in his gardens, updating his spreadsheet to track how many bulbs he planted in a day.

Over the past decade, with a visionary spirit and nurturing hands, Jim planted and cultivated a thriving 40-acre forest on his property in Virginia, transforming the land into a sanctuary for wildlife and pollinators. His restoration of native habitats ensures that his legacy will flourish for generations, rooted in the beauty and resilience of nature.

Jim served on both the Chautauqua Trustees and Foundation boards. A service in his memory will be held on the grounds during the 2025 season.

Jim attended Yale University and later earned his MBA from Harvard Business School, but his proudest accomplishments were his two children, Hunter and Kate, his granddaughter, Anna, and his 55-year marriage to Elisabeth. Though they could never quite remember whether it was 54 or 55 years having secretly eloped a year before their "official" wedding. The love they shared was undeniable, full of adventure, humor, and unwavering support.

Jim’s legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, and in the joy and generosity he brought to his family. While we mourn his passing, we celebrate the incredible man he was - our husband, father, grandfather, friend, and eternal source of joy.

In Jim’s honor, let’s all share a laugh today. And plant some seeds in your garden. It’s what he would have wanted.
