join us in person Tonight at the Center on at 6 p.m. for Politics in Judges and Judging, a community conversation with RHJC President Kristan McMahon, Director of Programs Elizabeth Hosier, and special guest, Professor John Q. Barrett.

People talk about United States Supreme Court Justices and other Judges as people who work in government but not in politics. Sometimes judges themselves make versions of this claim. As a nominee in 2005 to be Chief Justice of the U.S., for example, then-Judge John G. Roberts, Jr. testified that “Judges are like umpires. Umpires don't make the rules; they apply them.”

But U.S. judges do not live on a law-only planet. They come from us and remain connected to our political communities and concerns. And judicial decisions affect public policies and society. This public conversation will explore the overlapping spheres of law and politics in judging.

The event is free and open to the public.

To encourage open conversation, this gathering will not be recorded nor offered for virtual participation.
