Yesterday morning, a little after 5 am, a report of smoke coming from the Colony Motel in the Village of Celeron/Town of Ellicott on Rt. 394 was called in to 911. The first arriving chief confirmed  a working structure fire and began calling in resources. The last fire company went home at 8 pm last night.

Yesterday was a long and difficult day for over 200 hundred firefighters who gave their day to helping a neighbor. Please read this piece by the Sheriff, it is very well said.

And his remark about their finances is vey important as most of our fellow firefighters' employers DO NOT pay them when they leave work or come in late to not at all when responding to calls to their departments!

Joyce and I are proud to be members of the Chautauqua Fire Department and affiliated with the other 41 volunteer fire departments in Chautauqua County.

What follows is a post by the Sheriff on Facebook.

Chautauqua County Sheriff

The fire yesterday in the Town of Ellicott is a great example of the great community we live in. There were 14 fire departments that responded and another 10 agencies that were there to assist. A reminder that all but one fire department are volunteer agencies. This means they are freely giving of their time and sometimes finances to protect their communities. Over the last month we have also seen that they willingly put their lives in harms way to protect us - we have had some serious incidents where firefighters from a around the county were fortunate to survive and that is likely due to the many hours they spend training.

There have been various posts complaining about the fire yesterday and the inconvenience of having Fairmount closed. This is done to not only allow the fire departments to fight the fire by being able to have hoses across the street. But it also protects the many men and women on scene and allow them to potentially save lives of occupants that were living at the motel. Closing the road down is a matter of safety.

Before you complain about inconveniences please consider the sacrifices the many volunteers make every day to keep us safe. Perhaps even better - consider signing up to volunteer for one of these agencies that are so much in need of more volunteers.

My hat is off to the courageous men and women that are willing to stand in the gap for all of us - with the only compensation being that they are positively contributing to their community.

Sincerely,

Jim Quattrone, Sheriff

I was a volunteer firefighter and paramedic in a small town in Ohio for four years.  We were given about $3 per hour for our participation, which did not cover lost time at work nor adequately address the loss in terms of bloody clothing or whatever.  However, it was one of the most rewarding experiences I've had; a privilege to contribute to the community where I lived and somehow a sense for me of belonging to that community.  I encourage anyone who can physically perform the duties to volunteer.
