Thanks to Ruth M. for her warning about Will's Elite Painting. Thankfully, we've had just the opposite experience with a painter we found on The Grapevine -- Danny Diven. 

We were so happy with Danny's work, that this is what I write to people asking about local painting help: "I can give you an enthusiastic endorsement of Danny Diven, an excellent interior painter and repairman. 

Last year he did most of the interior of our historic (1822) William Howell house (just outside Mayville). He did all the five bedrooms and four bathrooms expertly, plus living room, dining room, kitchen and other minor nooks and crannies. My wife is a former antique dealer and student of vernacular architecture and house restoration. She was delighted with Danny's work. In some places he needed to remove up to five layers of wall paper and had a number of other challenges that one might expect to encounter in a two-hundred-year-old house. 

Danny is originally from eastern North Carolina, now living in Jamestown (both my wife and I have lived in North Carolina at various times, so lapsing into a bit of "Tarheel talk" from time to time was fun). Personally, Danny has an appealing and easy-going way about him, but at the same time, takes his work very seriously. It wears very well over time (he was with us most week-days for several months).
