All domain users are local?

I'm having a problem handling bounce backs.

My MAIL FROM address uses the same domain as the from address. The from address matches my 1 local users (ale...@mydomain.com).

However, the bounce back (which I'm trying to set up with VERP) can't be returned as it's always treated as a local user and sent to the MDA.

Can somebody help?
