Himalayan Monk & Technical Education

Malethi, surrounded by the hills of Himalay, is a beautiful yet an unusual village to have a vocational education center. For thousands of years saints and sages from all over Bharat have come to Himalay for meditation and in search of purpose for their lives. A true forest monk in that sense, Swami Hariharanand Bharati (Swami Hari) was raised in a village named Toli, Pauri Garhwal. He grew up in the foothills of the Himalayas and spent over 15 years meditating in the Himalayan forests after taking Sanyas vows from his Guru HH Dr. Swami Ram.

To honor his guru, Swami Hari established 'Swami Rama Nishkam Karmyog Trust' in 2001 at Malethi. Through this trust, a well equipped vocational education center has been established that serves the local community.

Meditating in the enchanted valley of Tarkeshwar blessed Swami Hari with wisdom and sacred knowledge even though he often asserted he knew nothing; but the wisdom of his pure heart shone in his every action. He headed the temple & ashram - a 600 year old sacred shrine in the Himalayas at Tarkeshwar; which was also his home for many years.

Swami Hari (picture above) - Renowned as a teacher who guided his disciples into a state of deep meditation, his teachings not only imparted practical knowledge & inspiration to his students but were also laced with humour. His purity was evident in his frequent and spontaneous joyful laughter which earned him the title of a 'laughing monk' by his loved ones. His simplicity - combined with a cheerful, kindhearted & friendly persona, attracted the people he met, in all the countries he visited, to become his friends.

Swami Hari dedicated his entire life to developing facilities that provide the basic requirements for the poor villagers living in the Himalayan Mountains; facilities that would eventually develop into a self-sustaining medical facility, an educational & research institute, vocational training and overall social development to the local village population of the Garhwal Himalayas. In June 2008 Swami Hari left for his heavenly abode, leaving behind a legacy for a large number of students, friends and disciples.

He isolated himself for 11 months inside a 6 ft x 4 ft cave that had only a single pin-sized point light coming in. After emerging from his tapasya, Swami Ram identified purpose of his life to teach Bhartiy Sanskruti (ancient culture of Bharat) to the western world and embarked on his decades long journey to achieve that across USA, Japan, Europe and many countries of the world.

Swami Ram began his task by studying Western philosophy and psychology, and teaching Eastern philosophy at many Western universities. He worked as a medical consultant in London and assisted in parapsychological research in Moscow. He then returned to India, where he established a clinic and ashram in Rushikesh. Mittal says, "With the blessings of Swami Hari, I was blessed to do some consultancy, which turned to be a project of Samaj Sewa to be instrumental in the establishment of Swami Ram Institute of Vocational Education and Research at Malethi, District Kotdwar, Uttakhand. My name was suggested by Professor SC Handa of Roorkee University to Dr Uttam, a renowned pediatrician of Delhi. The mission was to create vocational education facilities in this remote village of Uttarakhand. I worked for 4 years, traveling 16 hrs from Jind to Malethi with Dr Uttam at our own expenditure. Later associated besides Prof. SC Handa, Late Prof. RC Chauhan, Er SK Misra, Dr Vinod Upadhaya and Mrs Kusum Upadhaya. The project costed around Rs 3 cores. I made a humble contribution of Rs 3.25 Lakh from my pension. I must compliment the blessings of Maa Sewa and services provided by Dr Sunil Ghildhyal who was founder Principal of SRIVERM, the logo of which was designed by son Narinder M. Mittal."
