Weird active visit spikes

Recently we have seen huge spikes in our graph of visitors to our
website. Cross checking our google analytics stats and our web server
log indicates that the Chartbeat report of active visits is
incorrect. Can anyone please explain what may have happened?
On July 8, 2011 @ 9:05am we spiked from 100 active visits to 970.
On July 19, 2011@3:00pm we spiked from 290 active visits to 749.
