Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to share my trip data for the first time. I'm using an iPhone 4 with MotionX-GPS Lite Version 12.2 to record the track data. I followed the following instructions as closely as possible (they are out of date so I can't follow them exactly);

Everything seems to work as expected including the conversion of the KMZ file. However, when I attempt to upload the file to ChargeCar I receive an error - "You forgot to specify how altitude data was obtained".

Any thoughts on this issue?

Many thanks,

Kevin Sharpe

Hey Kevin,

First off, thanks for taking the time to upload your drive data - it's
greatly appreciated!

That error message should only trigger if you forget to specify how
altitude data was obtained for your trip. There is a field on the form
that reads: "Does your GPS data include barometric altitudes?" Did you
by chance forget to fill it out? If this isn't the case, please attach
your .gpx file and I'll look into this further.

Take care,
Paul

Also, if you could note what is out of date about the iphone upload
guide, it would be appreciated it.

Hi Paul,

Many thanks for the response.... You are correct, the solution was to select
an option for "Does your GPS data include barometric altitudes?" :-)

How do I know which option to select in future? I can't find any obvious
reference to this in MotionX-GPS Lite.

Regards,

Kevin Sharpe

Hey Kevin,

Take care,
Paul

Paul, I'll make some notes when I upload the next track.

Regardless of whether you use Motion-X GPS or any other app to record
on the iPhone (or Android, for that matter), you should always answer
the barometric altitudes question with a "no". Only a few models of
GPS receivers (e.g. Garmin GPS 60CSx) have barometric altimeters built-
in. All others estimate elevation using the GPS signal (which is only
accurate to about 50 feet or so, compared to the 1 foot accuracy of
the barometric altimeter). We use the user's answer to determine
whether to trust the reported elevations or to instead look them up in
the USGS elevation database (of which we have a copy).
